Thanks Tim.
No neck brace at this time. Have been considering one, before we take it to the barefeet and more speed think that this will be in the quivver of ski stuff. I drove the boat last night and the way it is propped it is very sluggish out of the hole and then it just takes off. When out with Larry last week-end acceleration was steady and constant (another reason to have an inboard....) Next trip out is with my boat so hopefully things will continue to improve. Need to get that Watkins fella out there with me! Pointers & suggestions are appreciated and welcomed. BTW - Kristin is looking forward to the CT Mini. Looks like we will be roadtripping up and are planning on bringing the boat along. Cheers |

Have you caught a heel and stretched the muscles in the front of your neck yet? Get a neck brace ASAP, trust me! I recommend the bfc one, the extra $ is worth it. Looking forward to seeing you guys next month!

Greg:
Looks good. I like the knee bend you have. I would suggest you relax your arms a bit, they seem tight and bent a bit at the elbow. let them out. Last point: look up! you are looking straight down. Andy (glassseeker) always tells me to look up, find the horizon. It will improve your posture AND your balance. As a matter of fact, when I am actually doing the start, it is a good habit to look out the back, and not down. If I fail at a LL start, one factore 100% of the time is I was looking down. Nice work, welcome to the bacerds ski club! ps. agree on the neck brace. only injury I have ever gotten barefooting is a backwards fall. would you know it, it was the one time that season I forgot to strap on the neck brace. Still hurts and is tight after 3 years. |

Funny thing about those. That spill I took at Greg's last week that he so kindly posted the video of: Even tho it was a hard hit and I saw stars for a moment, I did have my neck brace on and really didnt hurt my neck at all. But next morning...yup, those neck muscles reminded me of the spill.
One of the very cool things about this site. I believe that there are a number of new footers and bacerds footers around, especially in the old geezer club, like Roy, Greg, myself, among others that would have never ventured down these roads were it not for CCF. I've been footn since 1971 but after many attempts in my 20s and some in my 30s trying to learn to go bacerds, I gave up until I hooked up with Tim, Keith and Brad. Tim had been footing for a while and Brad and Keith just learning, but when they started passing me, I decided it was time to step up my game and at 53 resumed the quest to go backwards. Its been a fun ride. |

Required equipment the neck brace. Like Larry said, neck is sore even with one. My chiropractor admonished me about repetetive neck injuries. A backwards fall is like getting rear-ended in a car. He said even though they are sore for a couple of days and get better, it can lead to arthritis in the neck later in life.

When I learned we had no neck brace and would have to reach up and grab your hair to pick your head up if laying down...especially when learning anything backwards ...neckbrace ...get one and use it.

With being home next week (and the hopes of getting out a few times) I pulled the trigger on the neck brace today.

Well done Greg, welcome to the bacerd club!
Yup looks fast for me too! on the shoes i think you can ski on the 25-26 all day... Barefoot you can ski in the 31-33 range with no problem... Do a couple of more runs on the shoes until you feel comfy and move barefoot... Don't stay with the shoes longer than that, or the transition will be more difficult. |

Decided to join the fun. Not great footing but sure was nice water. Trying to get the deep start down but having problems. Best attempt here but was getting hammered in the head by spray.https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10203935670259520

That looks great. Congrats! Now to the bare feet! As strange as it sounds try it with the drysuit the first few times.

I posted this in the TN Vids thread that I just started but it is way to funny to not put here also. This was all 100% according to plan, by the way.

Back to Greg for a moment. Kudos to him for making the transition from a solid short line back start to going long in about 2 weeks. Some of us have been fiddle-farting around with that one for years and still don't have it.

Yeah Larry exact thing I was thinking! I have mastered the boom back deeps, for 2 years now, still fighting llbd, I was able to do a couple of succesfull runs both barefoot and on shoes last april at the WBC, but since then I havent had the chance to try again!
My back Is getting better, so I hope to be back on the water soon. Good Job Greg! |

To make the transition from Boom to longline use low Boom and add rope to your 5ft handle...add 2ft...then add 5 ft then use a shorter longline...50ft or so. Work your plane. ...remember it takes about twice as long to get up longline...twice the distance. Get a good plant toes cocked to shins and wait...go over a few bumps feel the acceleration then push and bend at waist keep head down but looking up for horizon...I push harder on the left foot and it drives me into the curl. Most problems are caused by rushing it. Trying to get up too soon...on a Boom timeframe.

To Andy's point (and I am only qualified to speak on what happened for me)......if you look at the angle of the rope in my picture it looks pretty steep. I had a 70' section hooked to the tower so I was probably in the 60 to 65 foot range behind the boat. Even so it felt like a long time to get on the water and the to a point where I could think about coming off the water land then rushed the $h-t out of it and failed then failed again. Withy the 3rd time being a charm the only thing that "felt" any different was the duration of planning. I was up behind the boat and actually ended up outside in the curl by accident each time

Greg - great job! You are really making me re-think the shoe thing, but I think I am going to stick with the feet, at least a few more times anyway. BTW, All three of those pictures were really nice pictures. I love how your photographer really captured the weather - GREAT camera work too! |

Steve....come on down!!! We can make it happen.
I also admire the camera work. Looks like a perfect night to have the lake to yourself. I mentioned it above and ill say it again....try the llbd with a drysuit. I have had friends that used the method and were quickly successful. One can move on from there, unless of course it is winter, then it's neede anyway. |

Steve / Bill
Thanks for the comments. The photographer actually was taken with the drivers smart phone. We on the water by 6:15 am and am guessing that this was about 7am with only a fisherman and kayak in sight. The dry suit is an interesting concept but unfortunately due to poor eating habits the dry suit is pretty darn snug and for the past 3 years I have been doing my cold water footing with the barefoot suit over the dry suit (kind of like it) I am anxious to get to the feat but do not want to rush the learning process. But then again perhaps it is time to strap on....... |

After seeing Greg make the short line to long line transition so quickly, I decided enough delays. I had tried a few starts up at his place then nailed it after four tries back home last friday. Repeated this morning. For others of you on this quest, its been said here a thousand times before, but I'll make it 1001. The key is Patience, patience, patience patience, patience, plant, patience, patience, patience, patience, stand. |

this is my only problem as well. Eddie preaches patience to me every time we are out. If I wait..I have no problem..if I rush it..no chance. someone else mentioned it..my transition from boom to LL was helped by Eddie adding 10' onto the 5'ft handle on the boom & having me master that 1st. seen your video on FB Larry...awesome! john |
