I had a vac leak on my spacer gasket so I pulled the carb a Holley 4160. I replaced both gaskets and put back on and ran boat in yard. Idle was so low it was almost stalling. I had to turn the idle screw a full rotation to get the idle about 700. I turned my air mixture screws in all the way in and that's where engine kinda stumbled but would still run. I know this means I have a bad power valve. Looking for a little input before I go tearing into it. The carb is about 3 years old with around 550hr. Ran great last trip.

They changed the PV design a while back to prevent backfire damage, so at 3 yrs old, that probably isn't the cause. The idle speed adjustment may be causing it to run on the transfer slots, hence poor response from the mixture adj screws. You may still have a vacuum leak somewhere else.

Check your initial timing. If it is too retarded it will cause you to have the throttle plates too far open to run off the idle circuits at idle rpm.
If it ran fine before I doubt that is the issue unless the dizzy slipped some how. My bet might be the idle circuits are plugged up somehow. |

Thanks for the response. Maybe something got in there when I was cleaning off the old gasket. Any tips on cleaning the idle circuits?

Today I sprayed some carb cleaner down the idle circuits and hit them with compressed air right after. Did it multiple times. I ran the engine and it didn't help at all. No vac leak anywhere. Maybe when I was scraping old gasket off a little piece got somewhere it shouldn't be? Would breaking down the carb and cleaning it allow me to get the idle circuits better? This is all a learning experience for me and any advice is greatly appreciated!

Yes, taking the carb apart & running thin wire thru the small passages is the best way to confirm that there are no plugs. The spray isn't very effective.

Ordered carb rebuild kit off skidim. Took apart carb cleaned everything real good. All the passages seemed real clean as carb cleaner with a straw blew freely through everything even through idle discharge hole. Transfer slot looked correct. Replaced power valve with 2.5 which was in there. I could spin the small end on the old power valve read somewhere this means it's bad.? Replaced accel pump diaphragm. I didn't pull off the secondary housing didn't think was necessary. I put back on and ran boat in yard and idle mix screws were not responsive I could still spin 1 side all the way in before it responded. The other side started to respond maybe 1/8 turn out. Pulled carb a second time and cleaned passages again and same problem. Kinda frustrated now as I feel stuck and been dying to go fish.

Don't overlook the base gaskets; also some are much better than others. Wedge plate?

Most are running a 6.5 PV but I don't think that's your problem. Never seen the wedge plate mounted that way either I wonder if you try turning it over.

I think it's just a spacer. There is no difference in height. It has some oil in reservoir from the pcv valve. There is a series of baffles in the channel that flows to the front of spacer. The gaskets underneath carb are new. I'll give it a flip and see what happens.

The spacer has always been this way since I bought the boat. It originally had a ab carter on it though. Been running the holley on it like this since I bought it new 3 yr ago.

Update:
Pulled the carb off for a 3rd time tore it apart and cleaned it again. I was messing with secondary butterflys and it wouldn't move so I gave it a good push and it popped open a little bit. Thought maybe I broke it. Upon further inspection everything looked ok. Put it back together and ran boat. Finally my idle mix screws are responding and got a real nice idle. Not sure what ended up being the problem? If it had something to do with secondary butterfly's being stuck or if I just finally got a clog free? Going to water test this week. |
