I'm going to re-upholster my '74 SN this winter. I wasn't sure if I should get a local upholster or go with ChristinesMarine.com ? I'm going to get new foam and skins, I have a estimate from Christines but I haven't gotten one from a local shop. Christines seem kinda high to me, plus I have to install it.
My concern is; Will a local car upholster use water suitable vinyl, foam and stitching? They may say they do?? Also, my drivers seat is not original and I'm going to go back with original. Does anyone know how big the plywood seat back & bottom is? |

A '74 should have still had a round back fiberglass bucket for the driver seat. The square cushions started again in '76. If you're trying to be 100% original, shoot me a pm. If the square cushions are ok, I think they are 16x16 (both back and bottom. The seat back is assembled and covered in such a way to hide the aluminum frames- keep that in mind when building the bases and installing (or make sure to have the conversation with your installer!).

Not all '73's or '74's had the bucket. Several came with the square seat.
It has been a few years since I've checked, but the last time I inquired about the correct skins for my '74, christines did not have them. |

That's an original bucket... Hold onto it! Or, sell it to me.
Al is correct, last I checked, Christine's does not have patterns for any of the fiberglass bucket seats. |

Carefully remove the stitching and send the bucket skins down to Christine's. |

Before I send it to Christines, I want to make sure it is covered correctly. The vinyl on the bucket just pulls up around and under the seat cushion and it leaves a un-covered area. The seat cushion has a bare area under it also. The seat cushion just sits in the bucket with no attachment. Is this correct for the seat? |

Frank, Sebastian has a good point. Gail is indeed a really good seamstress and has made many custom items for their 210 and a another local 210 owner. Mike is restoring a 80's Supra to which she is re-doing the entire interior for it. I haven't been up there to see it but Mike was planning on putting it all back together last week as the carpet cam in. Maybe he'll post some pics of the finished project here on the site. (hint hint) She has replaced the webbing on my wakeboard bindings and repaired/modified my Bimini top so it might be worth contacting her/them to see if she would do it. They are in Flowery Branch so having someone local do it could be a bonus if both parties are willing.
Just my $.02. |

I have propose this as I have 3 of the bucket styles they could use to generate patterns, but they are not interested in doing so the last few times I have asked. Sticking with a local shop is your best bet. |

My worry with my local "auto" upholstery shops is getting actual marine grade foam, vinyl and stiching. My uncle had his boat seat redone several years ago and they didn't hold up more than 5-years. |

I think your concern is valid... You'll want to make sure whichever shop you choose knows what they're doing. It can be difficult to find good shops- word of mouth is usually your best bet at locating one.

I think Frank needs to see a pic of 62wood's bucket. Steve's is one of the few that still have the original seat bottom cushion.
I tried, but search isn't working. It could be a little extra leg-work, but you could always order your own marine vinyl. |

Yeah, we go to Carter's almost every weekend. We have a RV and camp at Woodring Branch. We went camping 15-weekends this past year @ Carter's and took the boat about 12-times. That's a picture of our boat at Carter's |

Thanks Gary, I'll do that. There is this guy in town that does killer car upholstery and I'll get the vinyl that I want to use, for him. |

Thread, foam, plastic, etc are all considerations for marine use as well. Skill is one thing but marine experience is valuable too. Our interiors see a lot more water and uv exposure than cars do.

I used this method and had the vinyl shipped straight to a local shop. Other than the guy being 2 weeks late in delivery and not actually finishing, it would have worked out perfectly. |
