I lost the hard drive in my computer on Wednesday. I really can't complain since it was 15 years old. It's telling me to reload all the discs that came with it. That would be easy but my disc drive won't eject! My only issue are the pictures on it. At least the important ones are on photobucket. I'll need to go and buy a new computer and see if they can retrieve anything off the hard drive. Next time I'm down in Florida, I'll have to take some computer lessons from John!

Pete, just a thought, is there a small hole somewhere close to the eject button on your disc drive? If so insert a paper clip into it. This should open the disc drive.

15 years old is a pretty good run. Tom's recommendation would work for CD rom drives, but at 15 yrs old, you may be referring to a floppy drive as well... if so, you are hard core with the keep it original theme The computer place may be able to remove your hard drive and power it through an adapter dongle unless the hard drive is bad. you may have limited times to run the drive and retrieve information, so get everything you can the first time you plug the drive in.

Dreaming is correct. you may be able to power up the old HDD and retrieve your old files. I'd pick up a new external HDD (they're cheap nowadays <$100) when you buy your new PC and use it for backing up photos and important items. I'm curious to know how small that drive was if it's 15 years old. |

Last evening I opened up the computer and got the two disk drives out. I was able to manually retract the drives from the "read" position and then pull each drawer out. However when I powered up the computer, both drawers went back in and then up into the read position.
JP, I don't know how big the drive is and without it running, can't look it up. The system is XP so I think it's time for the whole thing to be recycled. |

I know how frustrating it can be, I have gone thru 1 at home and 4 solid state ones on my old works tough book. You'd have to call the help desk, then be on a Lanline so they could try to access it. Then they'd send you another out and it would take hours for you to load your plant maps for the different towns. They now have gotten rid of the laptops and are all using iPads

Pete there is a good chance you can retrieve the information off the hard drive.
The two simplest ways are:- 1. Remove the old hard drive from computer case, hopefully it is SATA interface drive and not the old IDE interface. You can then install this drive into a working computer (Vista, Win7 or Win8 operating system) You may have to change the permission on some of the files before you can copy them. 2. Remove the old hard drive from computer case and install it in a external USB hard disk case you can then connect it to working computer via USB and access files. |

If it came with XP, it's 13 years old.
