1985 SN Need driver's seat shell. The bottom of the shell is broken on mine and not available at Nautique Parts. Trying to restore my boat Need seat or ideas.

Daryl,
Welcome to CCfan. How about posting some pictures? We always ask since we love to see members boats. A diary entry would be great too. Post pictures of the seat shell as well. How are your fiberglassing skills? Even if zero, we'll walk you through it. I'm sure it can be repaired and would be an option if you can't find one. Even if you do find one, there is a chance that it too will be broken in the same spot. |

Are you talking about the rotomolded plastic shell or the fiberglass pedestal?

The pedestal is good just need the molded shell. I have found them at Nautique Parts but they only have the shells for 1996 or newer. It looks the same but I am not sure if it would work or not.

Pbrainard,
Thanks for the reply. I will try to get a picture of the boat and seat online today. I don't kn much about fiberglassing but I am sure I could learn. That seat looks like it is a molded plastic. Can I fiberglass over it? I think the problem came from my son sitting up on top of the back of the seat and it broke out around the back mounting bolts. If it could be fiberglassed it would probably be stronger anyway. DAryl |

Daryl,
If you don't have any luck finding a shell, then glassing over it is an option. The only problem is the adhesion of the resin to the plastic. I would drill holes throughout the shell especially in high stress areas and use epoxy resin. The holes would allow the glass on the outside to bond to the glass on the inside. The whole shell would be glassed with a couple layers. |

I'd be leery of glassing to plastic.
The 96+ drivers seat is very similar if not the same as the earlier delux seats. It woul only need to be exact if you were trying to reuse the vinyl and foam. Zach put a newer bucket in his '85 in place of the wood delux seat he had... Might be worth inquiring on the details. |

Tim, You must have missed my recommended procedure. Note I never recommend glassing to plastic but rather glassing through it via the holes. Sure not the easiest but if the shell is no longer available, it may be an option. The other option is to weld the plastic shell. That sure would be easier. |

Hey Peter,
I just posted a picture of my seat shell bottom. Also submitted a diary and picture of my 1985 SN. Website said it may take a day or two for the diary to be posted. Thanks for the feed back you guys have given me on my seat. On another topic I used to have some teak ski holders which I think got broke over time and my son probably threw away. Do you know if they are still available or where I might search? Thanks Daryl |

Daryl,
Welding the shell is certainly an option but then I would add a stainless angle mechanically fastened at the bottom to the back. I seem to remember one of our members making the teak ski holders for his boat. I'll search and see if I can find the thread. They certainly would be easy to make. I know of none available. |

Are you saying that you have ski holders or a seat shell for the 1985 SN?

Daryl,
My 85 seat looks similar, but not as bad. I picked up some braces from Christines for the seat to sit on top. Link -- scroll down to drivers seat braces The picture is deceiving. Both braces are the same width. I guess these started coming standard on later model SN 2001s. The hard part about using these braces now that your seat has cracked is that the bolt from the adjustable frame will not be long enough unless you can get the bottom of the seat totally flat before trying to bolt it in. I am going to drag the boat home and put longer bolts into the sliders. |
