81 S/N with 351 from 82
runs perfect at home on trailer - around 75 degrees southern CA weather took it to Colorado River, ran fine, then broke a fan belt. replaced it and took it back to launch ramp and it didn't want to run at all, choking and missing; outside air temperature was around 115 F took it home to fix and it runs fine back at the house. could it be the weather? I know when I used to fly small planes we had to lean the mixture due to 'density altitude'... carb was rebuilt 2 years ago by a local carb business but not specifically tuned for motor afterwards. Thanks! |

Is it a holley 4150 or aftermarket?? Hoping it's a marine version-pics and list # will help sort things out.
could also be a fuel filter/water separator/fuel pump issue-how old is the fuel in your tank?? Lots of help will chime in when specifics are known. |

When you took it back home, did you charge the battery or just put a new belt on and go.
If the broken belt was your alternator belt, you might have been getting down on charge enough to affect the ignition. If you charged the battery, that might explain why it runs fine after replacing the belt. |

Thanks.,
When I bought there 1/2 tank of approx 1 year old fuel per PO. Started and ran it at home on trailer with this fuel without a problem. Upon arrival at river, topped off tank with premium. Ran until belt broke. was alternator belt but didn't require charging of battery or anything after belt was replaced. so just put a new belt on and (tried) to go. wondering if it was flooded and made worse in the 117 F weather? pictures of the carb attached. any advice on fuel mixture would be appreciated. Steve,
Sounds like you are heading in the proper direction but the broken belt wouldn't flood the engine. Next time you shut off the engine, look down the carb and see if there's fuel dripping. I'm guessing it's time for a carb rebuild. Do you still have any contact with the PO? If so, ask him how his bomb making business is doing. He's "backyard'd" the fuel supply with rubber hose and hose clamps. |

Never seen that before. I wonder if the tube is available as a separate part.

That J tube looks like it's been bent and broken off, I assume to fit under the flame arrestor. One of two issues here..... 1) The PO did some nice upgrades like changing out the float bowls to externally adjustable with sight windows. Holley marine carbs never came from the factory equipped with these but certainly are interchangeable. Not too often that anyone takes the time to make this upgrade and even if they did, why hack up the secondary vent tube then???? 2) The PO installed an automotive carb and hacked it by installing a J tube on the primaries and breaking off the straight tube on the secondaries and then putting in the rubber fuel line. My money is on option number two. Give us the list number of the carb that's on the air horn and we can determine for sure what you have there. |

What is a secondary vent tube for?
I was bending my brain trying to figure out what that rubber hose coming off the secondarydiagphram was. |

It's the vent for the secondary float bowel. That carb like Eddie says has some funny things going on with it for sure. I wonder if it's something pieced together? The throttle shaft arm looks more automotive but the vent bosses where the j tubes are usually cut at an angle on an automotive carb. It's also missing the choke pull rods plastic plate where it passes thru the body. Might be best to get another. Please post the list number when you get a chance.

I don't think it's attached to the secondary diaphragm Brian. It looks to me like it's attached to the base plate of the carb for the PCV breather but I could certainly be wrong. |

thanks for the tips. I knew the fan belt breaking didn't cause it to be flooded, it was a new day at the ramp - hard to explain the whole thing in writing without going on forever.
found that the rear j tube (broken one in pic) was dumping fuel into the motor even at idle, causing the black smoke. took out the needle and seat and found the little o-ring on the needle was broken. got the carb kit, replaced that needle, adjusted float height and runs great. once I get home I'll complete the rebuild, get the new j-tube on and get that fuel line squared away. thank again. |

I would recommend not puting a dime into that carb, i see a lot of red flags.
Firstly the chevy style fuel barb, black hose and clamp setup. The bowls. While Holley would put externally adjustable floats on some of the hipo 4150DP marine carbs, you will see that they never add bowls with sight plugs, another source of leakage. the vacuum port on the metering block indicates it in not marine but automotive, this means that that the pvco's are likely not optimal for marine use. This means that jetting under med-high load is compromised by being fat because holley basically drill oversized pvco's on most carbs EXCEPT marine and medium duty truck carms like on old loadstars, because they spend all day at 1/2-full throttle, The basic metering block in a 'universal' 600cfm has oversize pvco's to keep neophite tuners from fraggign their engines by making them run notoriously rich and belch when stomped on. The main jets are a wildcard unkown, but not a safety issue If there is ported vacuum port on the throttle plate, that would be further evidence of a frankencarb. As Eddie suggested, get the list number off th eair horn, but might be just a curiousity at this stage, because we see enough wrong that is not econmically feasible to do forensics on that turd. Best get a new carb and prebent hard line from pump to carb, and don't look back |

more interesting knowledge, thanks. I have no idea as that carb came from the PO of my first boat that was all torn apart so it could easily be something thrown together. picture of bowl attached for the curious.
I also have the carb from the 2nd boat (blown motor caused transplant) so it seems that could be a good candidate for me to adopt after a rebuild, but it looks pretty rough. (2nd picture attached). i can't believe how expensive the marine carbs are and had not planned on putting that much money into one for this boat. |

Yup that's an auto carb. 600 CFM 4160. Obviously the PO tried to make it look like a marine carb. Lose that sucker.
You say that you can't believe how much a marine carb costs and exactly the reason that a auto carb is sitting on there now and exactly the reason it isn't running like it should. Like Tom stated marine vs. Auto are different. The pic of the second carb does look like a correct marine unit. Rebuild that one and you're good to go. |

What you want is the QuickFuel M-600 marine carburetor. Great value at only $475.
