I have a 1984 Nautique and when I turn the key it will not engage the starter. The voltage meter only shows 10 volts but my battery is charged and is ready. I can short out the solenoid and start the engine. Is the problem in my switch or the solenoid?

If you only have 10 volts at the battery and it has been charged, the battery may be bad. How old is the battery?

I went to get a new battery yesterday and the parts store checked it out and said the battery is fine. I got them to let me put a new battery in and it did the same thing. I can short the solenoid out and the engine will start.

Hopefully you are not shorting the relay. A short means a direct connection between positive and negative on a DC system. That sure would make plenty of sparks!! Do you mean you are shunting the relay contacts? GET THE VOM OUT!!! Although not relevant to the start relay not working, do NOT use a deep cycle battery for your starting application. Terry, Your problem should be in one thread to avoid confusion. |
