So when i picked up my 86 nautique 2001 a couple of weeks ago I hooked up the engine to a hose and started up the engine to make sure things were working ok. This is my first inboard and i did not know that i had to drain the "filter bowl". And it became very cold the next day to where that water froze. All of the other water was drained from the system except for that "filter bowl".

Three days later i wanted to check on the engine and finish the winterization. Well the bowl and such was frozen. I was able to melt that ice with warm water and a heater. After melting i started the boat and it began to overheat.

I was just reading an owners manual and it says
"Late in the 1985 model year Correct Craft initianted a change from a water filter manufactured by Vetus to one produced by Sherwood.
THE SHERWOOD FILTER BOWL REMAINS FULL OF WATER EVEN AFTER THE REST OF THE RAW WATER SYSTEM HAS BEEN DRAINED. TO PROPERLY WINTERIZE THE BOAT, THE FILTER BOWL SHOULD BE REMOVED AND EMPTIED.
IF WATER IS NOT REMOVED, THE BOWL COULD BE SUBJECT TO FREEZE DAMAGE AND THEREFORE CAUSE OVERHEATING PROBLEMS DURING THE NEXT SEASON."

My question is what the heck is this bowl and how much will it cost me to replace because both me and my father don't know about this?

I believe you are referring to the raw water strainer.

When you ran the boat after thawing it out, did you have water running through the engine?

If so, then theres a good chance the strainer was damaged when it froze. If there is a crack, it will suck air and your engine will overheat. You can buy a new one at SkiDIM. Just make sure you get the one with the right hose size (1" or 1.25").

i think thats what happend that the raw water strainer cracked. My engine was overheating when i had it running again. Also the engine was not sucking in a lot of water. It would take a little but not much.

You can verifiy if this is your problem by running it using a fake-a-lake with a water hose (on the trailer). The engine will either draw the water in and run cool or you will see where the leak is if there is one. If you see no leak and your boat sill runs hot, look for an obstruction.

The raw water filter strains out gra$$, weeds, etc. which might get sucked through the intake and helps prevent such debris from entering the engine. You should check it periodically to make sure it is clean. Where I live, I routinely get leaves, aglgae, etc. in the filter. BKH

So where is the raw water pump ((or bowl)) on the engine. Here is a picture of my boats engine. If you see it or can indicate where it should be could someone point it out?

there are larger more detailed pictures if you click here

If you are referring to the raw water strainer, it looks like this:

I shot you a PM on the2001. If you could use a hand in person, shoot me an email. I drive through your town every day on my way to work.

Your impellar is likely now wasted. By 1 plus a spare. Find all the pieces else it will cause problems.

Where is the impeller located?

I'm telling ya. I'm a real rookie when it comes to inboard mechanics.

Within the raw water pump, lower left.

Fragmants may lodge in the t-stat housing.

Wakeboardin2k4, not all boats came equipped with a strainer like the one shown above. Some of us had to add them on aftermarket. Follow the hose from your water intake (from the bottom of the hull) to the raw water pump. The strainer should be somewhere in between (preferably upstream of the trans cooler).

There isnt one on my boat. I searched and searched my entire engine. Im now wondering if my impeller is what was causing water to not circulate through the engine. I don't want to take off my raw water pump at this point in the winter because i have anti freeze in there, but I may have to in order to figure out whats wrong with it

There would be no problem with removing the RWP. PCM's recommended winterization procedure has you remove the water pump after filling the block with antifreeze. They recommend the impeller be removed to prevent the blades from taking a permanant "set".

Eric,

Congrats on your new 2001. Love the 454 engine. Did you buy that boat in Wayland, MA? I think I saw it for sale on Ebay. I'm local to Wayland and Lake Cochituate if that's the same boat.

Good Luck!

Ken,

Thank you very much Ken. Yes, it is the boat from Wayland ma$$. No one bought it on ebay which gave me the time to go check it out and buy it. I love the boat. The sound of the 454 is amazing.

I just got done removing the decals off of the rear of the boat. I am going to wetsand, polish and wax the back of the boat next week. I am using the rear as my test area because it had the worst discoloration and I want to see how much of an improvement wetsanding does for my boat.

I'd recommend getting a strainer and adding it in line with you raw water pump. It will help keep your cooling system clear of seaweed and trash that gets sucked into the water intake. here is the link: http://www.skidim.com/products.asp?dept=1006

wakeboardin2k4

I know this is an older post, but hope this helps out.

Here is the impeller inside the pump.

You can carefully pull the impeller out of the pump with a needlenose. It is recomended you pull the impeller out during storage so the blades don't take on a "set" position from sitting inside the pump all winter. If you look at the picture, the space where the impeller fits is kind of oval (for lack of a better word). It compresses the blades on the left side of the picture when it spins. You don't want it to stay like that all winter.
I placed mine in a jar with r.v. antifreeze. I don't know if it will help, but it should keep the rubber from drying out.

Make sure you put it in the correct way when you reinstall it. Make a note of how it looked when you removed it, provided it was installed correctly to begin with.

88 Nautique- Thanks for the the picture. I see what you are saying. I plan on replacing my impeller in the spring, but I can see why it would be good for me to remove it during the winter. I plan on removing my RWP once it gets a little warmer so that I can put in my new impeller. This is all on the list of things to do for the spring.

This is good advice- but probably unnecessary in his case. The pump on the 454 is different and should only install one way. I always try and install the impeller correctly, but Ive been told that if you put it in backwards it will correct itself.

I didn't think about that TR. I haven't seen a new impeller yet. I'm going to order one for a spare. Do the splines point straight out when they're new? If so, I guess it really wouldn't matter. Still learning.

Yup, they do. It probably stresses the impeller a little less if its installed in the proper direction.

Yes the impeller blades themselves will "flip" and correct themselves if oriented backward. What is important with that installation is that you get the hoses reinstalled on the same pump connections that they came off of. With a RH engine, the hoses are crossed near the pump, and it's very common for folks to reverse them.

That's a rare boat you have.....Not many Ski's out there with big blocks. Sure hope your engine didn't freeze and crack the block or manifolds when it got cold! If the oil starts to look milky when you start it up, shut down and look for big problems!
