I'm in the market for an original windshield that will fit a 1976 Mustang 17. It's the swept back version with the longer port & starboard glass panels & frame. I'm not sure if the windshield comes apart in panel sections or not; if so I really only need the starboard panel.

I may have a piece of frame to replace the bent one. I think I also have a complete unit. will you give me some dimensions of what you need sand I will check.

Well I'll try to make it short, but my wife, myself, and a friend are lucky to be live. Prop-shaft came jetting outta the transmission ( luckily not under full power),prop-shaft it the rudder & sent the boat into the sharpest 90 degree turn I've ever seen a boat take to the port. Needless to say I went out over the starboard side blowing out the windshield while I flew a good 30 yards before I hit the water. Thank god my wife throttled the boat back and tossed the life cushion a whopping 3 feet to my rescue......lol! Believe me we've spent a few sessions on the dock since practicing how to get some distance from a throw device.
I've since talked to a guy who's going to update the prop-shaft/trans hook-up to a newer configuration than the old original CC version so It wont happen again. I'm 53 been on the Great Lakes since I was 11 years old, owned 8 boats since I was a kid; and never knew such a thing could happen in an inboard. Most all the boats I've owned were I/O's so I was clueless. |

Wow Gerry, quite a story. Sorry I didn't mean to make light of it, but when Pete asked the question, I couldn't help but think of Jeff Kostis' shenanigans in his M-17 at one of the CCF events. I just assumed yours was a downed tree or something. I know what you experienced can be scary. Same thing happened to me once, when I was a teen driving our 66 mustang. Shaft slipped out, same hard turn. I stayed in the boat, but a passenger in the back went flying out and what was the most scary was that there was another boat following rather closely. Fortunately he saw the kid fly out.

Wow Gerry. I'm glad to hear there weren't any serious injuries.
The prop shaft coming out of the coupling is a classic case of misalignment. I know you will now be checking it at least annually. When you have the new shaft (probably an A.R.E.) I highly recommend you have the mechanic check the stringers for rot. It is one of the causes of misalignment. Larry, I hope you are as well. |

Same thing happened to Jackie Deen, scary stuff.
I've come across a few boats with fretted couplers and have bought a little time with shaft collars... But shaft replacement is the real fix. |

Thanks for the input guys! Regardless of the fix it'll happen at any expense, I don't want it to happen again. I work a lot, so I have a master boat mechanic neighbor (friend) who lives here on the lake doing the work for me. The hard thing for me to find is the original WS frame & glass with the "Water Bonnet" etching on the it.
