I picked up some 15/40 NAPA premium fleet oil the other day for $8.88 a gallon.
Run it at work -1100 ppm zinc and 700 ppm magnesium. Good stuff - Just incase anyone wants to know. |

The boat is layed up now but I do use Shell Rotella 15/40 in it. For half price I might go with the NAPA/Valvoline Oil

Hey Doggie, how does that compare to the Rotella??
15/40 is what is spec'd for most of the 2002+ PCM Chevy's Run Rotella in my Excal since new, if this oil is as good maybe give it a try |

Any roller motor (like your excal) is going to be pretty darn tolerant to oil... Any decent quality 15w40 is gonna be just fine. That NAPA stuff is likely a good choice, as is Chevron DELO, which is very reasonably priced. Rotella (like Castrol GTX) has a good rep but almost 50% more expensive.
What's the phos content of the NAPA stuff Andy? |

The Spectrometer we use for aircraft oils doesn't pickup phos
but typically Zn, Mg & phos run together so I'm confident there's phos in the oils that ping 900 + ppm Zn. |

Check the PQIA website and surf around some, you'll probably figure out that every 15w40 diesel oil out there has plenty of zinc and phosphorus. Wal Mart Supertech included. I have always ran Rotella 15-40 but would be open to cost savings if something was out there. Minimal cost at 2 changes per year anyways.
I always ran Valvoline 10-40 in my 67 before I knew crap about Zinc levels. Flat tappet performance camshaft with pretty stout valve springs and I have had 0 issues with it. |

Seeing so many of the established "wizards" on the site who use Rotella (or similar) makes me feel good about having used it for years as well, thanks.
