pros a cons?
Im getting mixed advice from local friends and boat guys. they also dont have a classic like i do. Im sure it would be weird if you put straight pipes on a 100k wake boat. but seriously who has done this and what are your thoughts? any cons? Thanks |

1986 ski nautique new 351w block gt40 heads
used primarily on lake houston/upper san jac river. but the wife and i have hauled it to canyon lake, summerville, and hope to pull it to Florida for the meet up. i live 10 mins from the lake. not on the water but we were out 3 out of 4 weeks a month in the summer. we didn't ski much last year because it was the first year we got to enjoy it since i started rebuilding stuff. i want to wake board behind it this year. |

Keep in mind that for many of us, mufflers are "new" technology, as our boats were never equipped with mufflers in the first place......

+1 on what 74Wind said....
I think LPSL is the reason why my 72 saw more water time than the 88'. The sound is pure music to my ears and most people who are around as I approach a dock, ramp, raft up or slow down as I enter the no wake zone............. the first comment is usually......." Dude, I love that boat and that thing sounds freaking awesome!" "What year is it?" ![]() ![]() |

Andrew, I'm old, and all my boats are old. I've spent many an hour riding in and driving old boats. The sound does NOT get old! ![]() It's my opinion that marine exhaust systems are less restrictive than stock automotive. Don't expect performance gains by removing the mufflers. I suggest removing them. You can always put them back in. |

We are in the process of re powering this Tique and have removed a perfectly good pair of mufflers and exchanged them with these copper pipes from another boat. It will probably be a little louder, but I don't think it will be too loud.

As much as I love open thru pipes this is the real question. I had no mufflers in the 81 and it was extremely loud and extremely cool. But after being in the boat for 5-6 hours worth of skiing everyone in the boat was deaf. The drone can be so deep at certain rpm's that is it just not comfortable. Go ahead and flame away but I have open exhaust in the Hurricane and love it but my ski boats are muffled. |

I heard that from another member recently. Our Malibu is the loudest of our boats by far. I must either be deaf or you guys have sensitive ears, as I've never noticed the boat to be loud for skiing, only for sitting in the back seat while cruising. |

Agree with Alan, drone sucks, but if you never spend a ton of time in it at once, then you can't beat the sound of un-muffled duals.

The drone gets to me too like Alan says. My ears are always ringing anyway and after awhile it only makes it worse. I have just spent the good part of 2 weeks getting this one changed over. Originally Shamrock used 3" hose from the risers reduced to 2 1/2" water pipe and tips. A donor Nautique offered up the 3" mufflers and tips. Hi Teks round out the package. Splashing in a couple of hours, will report back on how it sounds. Disappointed on the fit of the Hi Teks, they certainly were not bolt on.

Bite Me Pete. I don't sit in my backyard that backs up to the lake using the boat for an intermittent 10 minute ski. We load it up and spend 5-6 hours in it. With the 81 I used a flyhigh so when pulling a wakeboarder I had people sitting in the backseat for sometimes 20 minutes The drone gets to everyone in the boat and can really start to test peoples patience. It makes people tired and cranky and shortens our day. So again, my hotrods are loud my ski boats are not. |

Would consider how many hours you run a year and what percent is while pulling someone. Loud is cool and sounds great but as many above have also stated, it will wear on ya. Best plan is get at least 2 boats, 1 loud & 1 not so loud!!

So, if you don't have residents to piss off that could complain which may impact your boating experience (authorities) then it's just a matter of personal preference.
Gary, I've noticed that exhaust and solid platforms don't get along so well. The at rest reverberating can be obnoxious IMO. |

Alan nailed it. Love straight pipes on my hot rods, but have re-muffled all of my serious ski boats. It makes a big difference behind the boat at slalom speeds and above, especially barefoot. The neighbors complain less too.

Hopefully, we'll get to see how loud the Tique is at White Lake. |

The day I can't handle straight pipes is the day I turn in my man card. I will say any dual pipe CC should be straight pipe. But a hard core slalom tug which would be anything NWZ and newer I'm not so sure I'm in a hurry to take the muff out, despite the repeated request from my wife. However I don't think I'd ever do a muffler repair either.

And if you're a non resident using the lake, the homeowners already don't like you so give them the straight pipes.

My dad wants to put mufflers on our mustang... That's never going to happen though. My uncles boat though, it's definitely loud with the 440.

Although this may not win me any friends among the majority of the crowd here...
If you have people riding in the back seat a lot, and you go on longer jaunts than just taking a couple people skiing at a time, I vote for the mufflers...strongly. Even with the muffler, the exhaust drone from the back seat of our boat when on plane is kind of annoying until you're up above 25 mph. Until recently (we're relocating and going to live on a lake) we tend to run the boat for 2-4 hours at a time. If you're going to be out early in the mornings, I just consider it a courteous thing to do for others on the lake. |
