Our oldest passed his driving test this morning. He drove himself back to school. What a weird feeling of pride in his accomplishments and nervousness about his safety.

Looks like he took out a few waste cans on the way, lmao!!

Been there done that, Just wait until you are waiting for them to return home and they might be a little late, ughhh.

My daughter is about 9 months driving now, she has done "pretty" well for the most part, she got her first ticket right at the 6 month mark (rolling a stop sign) and backed into a mailbox (barely even a mark) about the same time. That is a good time to put a bit of the fear of God back into them.

Good Luck!!!

Be afraid. Be very afraid. Two young drivers in my family. Found out after third car totaled that my wife and I are non-cancellable on our insurance policy because of 28 year low claims history. Guess that's the only thing keeping us insured. We sort of took away driving privileges for oldest daughter and recently restricted driving to son to "essentials" only work and school. My tow vehicle fortunately only goes a short distance to local lakes, but it's looking sadder with the passage of very little time. BTW--no kids borrowing the boat. Just sayin'

I feel your pain, my middle daughter started a month ago. There are a lot of lessons to be learned and taught, the most important part is to remember to keep your patience.

My oldest has been driving for two years and it has been pretty rough. My advice is to make sure the car they drive is a beater. Second is to remember that a lot of times stuff happens that is out of there control. Like Quinner, my daughter got a speeding ticket (yeah, yeah apple, tree, fall not very far...) but upon further review - cop was probably more concerned about her being truant (didn't realize her school was off that day). She has an incident on a snowy road and landed up against a telephone pole - again from everything I can reconstruct, she was being very careful.   And She has gotten really good at backing out of parking spaces into cars that are going by (twice), these are the events I have laid solely at her feet - you HAVE to do better looking where you are going. I have had to nearly bite off my tongue, but we have gotten through it and we have learned a lot of hard lessons.

The responsibility is a huge one, the freedom (for both the parents and the child) are huge - I can't tell you how nice it is to have my daughters driving themselves to activities - they have even figured out how to share the car pretty well. I am hoping daughter #2 has also learned from her sister's incidents, she seems to be a little more careful but only time will tell. In the meantime, enjoy your new found freedoms (or at least not having to cart him to EVERY activity)!

He's actually a pretty good driver...we've let him get a lot of time behind the wheel. Still, he is young, a teenage boy and has a lot to learn.

being a parent of a child lost in a car accident at 14 after jumping into the back seat of a car I am much more an advocate for seeing my children driving than riding.

Yeah, I could see that. I trust my kids a lot more than their friends and the other drivers out there.

I also agree. When my daughter was 18 she and her friends set off for spring break in PCB ( something I'd dreaded for years prior...) the only thing that made me feel good was that she was driving and I taught her well. Also that she couldn't be left behind somewhere cause she had the keys haha.... (also gave them all a good talking to on departure about sticking together, drinking, cops, the guys are only there for one reason, and all that kinda crap...something I wouldn't have been able to say to them all if they'd left from someone else's driveway. ..)

The more they drive the better they get, and the devil you know is better than the devil you don't. ...
