James,
It's great to have you with us. Welcome to CCfan. I feel you will find that there's plenty of knowledge with the membership that can and will help with just about anything you need. Modern pitots will work fine. A slight elongation of the mounting holes is all that's needed to use the old holes in the transom. Keep an eye out for the hull side tags. They come up occasionally on Ebay. One of our members reproduced them but I think he sold out. List some of the items you are looking for. At what stage are you with the restoration and what did you start with. We'd love to hear more and of coarse we always ask for pictures. I'm heading over to Arbor Vitae Thursday morning and if you would like me to stop by, I'd be happy to. |

She has been in the family for some time now, and has always been 'mine' but not official. Now it is official and I want to get her back to just like it was on the brochure. Everything original that is possible. Thus the need for the AirGuide pitots. Its getting restored with the stripes added back this spring as far as paint and body go. Many of the things missing are little features like the Pitots or name plates. I don't know what an "orange" is by the way. James |

James,
CC made some SN's that they considered promotional boats. Most went out on the lease program to ski clubs. I'm sure the Minocquabats had several. They were bold colors like orange with bold hull side graphics. |

1972 Ski Nautique "promo"
1970 Ski Nautique "promo" Despite what paperwork you may have, it appears your boat is actually a 1970 model year. Are there any ID tags located on the boat? Stringer, morse control, HIN stamping? |

The original pitots are hard to come by. Some do come up every once in awhile on Ebay but 3 is going to be tough. I'm always the one for originality and even known for it on site but, the new pitots look almost like the originals. Unless someone really knows what they are looking at, the new ones aren't noticed.
What engine is in your SN? |

Ummmm yes that is my boat. That is my father driving....
our boat was purchased in july 1971 as a new boat. the hull # confirms it's a 1972.( it was not uncommon in those years to release the next model year during peak boating season.) i met the original owner a couple of years ago who confirmed the model year and did say it was a "promo options" boat w/ a bigger than standard engine( ford 351/250 hp crusader conquerer v-8.) i know it's not a 1970 nor 1971...i have a 1971 sales sheet and believe the difference is '71 wind shield was a single piece...1970 hull had a raised area down each side and the boat was new in summer 1971 |

This is about the time when HIN's (hull identification numbers) were molded into the hulls. It should be in the upper starboard side of the transom. Take a look to see. You can't go by sales sheets since years overlapped with pictures and specs. |

Very cool boat. Welcome!
I think you may be off a few years on the hull change... Last year for the 1st gen SN was '69. Can't say for sure what year the green boats were promos but many details indicate '70-71. The serial number on the plate next to the throttle would allow Art to pull the build sheet and confirm. You're correct about the model year transition happening somewhere around July of the year before. More pics please! |

Hey James,
Glad you found us.. That picture of your Dad was taken by me last fall. I met your parents while they gassed up the Nautique.. You found the right place for any advice and often times hard to find parts.. Just ask away.. In the meantime, this crew loves pictures.. More the better. You have a special boat there. Good luck in the restoration.. Oh and DO NOT paint that hull. The green will come back with wet sanding and buffing !!! Don't forget to check out the reunion pages.. We need to see that boat in person down in Green Lake , WI one summer !!! Moj' |

The 72's I've seen still had the serial number on the capacity plate... No HIN on the transom until '73. The plexi windshields would have been common (likely standard) on the early 2gen SN hulls (70-71). Some 71's got the square windshield that persisted through '74. My theory on the green promos is that they got the square Martinique windshield while the plexi was still commonplace on the SN. They're the only SN's I've seen that got that windshield. I wouldn't doubt that the boat was purchased new in mid-71... And I also wouldn't be surprised if the boat spent the summer of '70 pulling tournaments or ski shows (perhaps never titled or registered?). The build sheet should tell us when the engine was placed. Can you get some measurements and pictures of the emblem area? The hole pattern and spacing will be a clue. The change from the 15" chrome emblems to the white/black plastic happened in early-mid '71 (model year). Motor box vents on the side indicate '71... '70 had one at the rear and '72 didn't have any vents at all in the box. |

Looking closer, lifting ring style looks to be 70-71, not 72... I'd like to see some close ups of the bucket seat shape. They look to be the slightly narrower 69-70 seats vs the 71+ versions. 'By 72 most SN's seemed to get the wider observer seat and square cushions (instead of the fiberglass buckets which were used on other cc's through '73 or so).

I could go buy a "new" 1970 Ski Nautique today that the dealer has had sitting on the showroom floor all this time.

Didn't we all at one point debunk this "promo" era?? 70' Green 71' Yellow 72' Orange 73' Red, white and Blue. James boat was has the old style 2 piece fiberglass bucket seats, old style pylon and the very old style Teleflex steering wheel. As I discussed with his dad, who told me the boat has never left the lake since originally delivered back in 72' did say it was a promo before it got there. Did they actually title boats when they were delivered officially to the 1st owner, out of Promo status?? Sounds weird.. This boat screams 1970.. Perhaps they had a left over hull that received a high-bred of parts and when done it got titled a 72' ? Stranger things have happened in the life of CC.. And strangely enough this boat is running a 351.. That would hold true for a 72' but 70/71 ? Wasn't CC running all Chrysler at that point?? HW, were is a brand new 70' on a showroom floor? |

That promo year lineup was our best guess Moj... Don't think we've ever proven it or disproven it. I am not seeing any "mixed" hardware on this boat, not sure what you're seeing to indicate that? Glass buckets were 1-piece and did change style in '71, so that's an important distinction. Seems more boats from the 60's and 70's than not have questionable years assigned on their titles/reg based on some sort of paperwork error. Build sheet from the factory usually will confirm the history, but the hardware on the boat rarely lies. Not sure what you mean about Chrysler, I'm not aware of any period where they were an exclusive supplier.

Not a 70' windshield I guess was the one thing that came to mind.. Thought you or someone had said the 351 didn't come into play on the SN until at least 72'.. Eh, no matter, cool boat.... |

OK, just so you know that doesn't make it a 1972 model. Those last 2 digits are purely a coincidence.
The green boat I linked above is said to have a 351 as well as Reid's 71 promo. Good info on Hull IDs here. |

'70 is the first year I've seen 351w's show up (in cc's)... Reid's inca '70 Cuda has a conq-crusader 351w.
Yup, coincidence on the serial number having a 72 in it, it was just a sequential 4-digit number that didn't get reset each year... A little primitive compared to the industry wide standard adopted in '73. Moj, that windshield came from the Martinique (same hull as the SN and would have likely debuted along side it in '70, wish we had a brochure to confirm) and may have pre-dated the square SN windshield that was commonplace starting in '72... All the more reason why it's likely a special case for the '70/71 promo. All of the green ones have it. |

Guys
Love the Discussion, and yall are a sea of knowledge so I have another question. When it comes to the Accent Pieces (Racing Strips for example) and verbiage (Ski Nautique/National Tow Boat for example) on the boat, can anyone tell me what was authentic to the '71 promo? Also the seats were two toned am I correct? Thanks guys will update pictures as soon as the coloring is restored! Thanks |

Probably never know on the seats James. The structure is correct, the color??
By all indications, yes, the markings on the boat look correct for the Promo of that age. The scripted "ski Nautique" and transom graphics should be duplicated for sure. "Keep it original" |
