Hey Guys -
For those that remember my struggles with my less than perfect engine here is an update. My 1990 Ski Nautique is now up and running, I have compression back in all cylinders and I have been able to put a whopping 5 hours on the engine. I still have one pesky issue that I can't seem to kick - white smoke. It is present most when on a hard run, or after a hard run. Smells a little gassy, but looks like steam. Here is some basic info: - runs and idles great - Starts straight up - Fuel pump not discharging into clear tube - new exhaust manifolds - complete set - good compression - drained old gas and replaced - new impeller - choke operating fine - timing good (electronic ignition upgrade) - new plugs (not leads though) - original intake manifold - temp 155-170 - Oil Pressure 55 Like i said, it runs great so Im not really concerned, but I know there is something in there that needs attention. Could there be a leak in the intake manifold somewhere causing the smoke? Im replacing the T-stat tomorrow to be sure it is OK, but temps have been fine while running. Any other thoughts? For those that are interested here are some links to a WOT run and IDLE immediately after the run. WOT: https://youtu.be/Uq7zklGRzho IDLE: https://youtu.be/VjQBpd8_6nE Thanks in advance guys. Pic of boat below. |

Ryan,
Looks normal to me. I don't feel you have anything to worry about concerning the white vapor. You need to factor in the dew point of the ambient |

Thanks for the quick reply. My only concern with it is the strong smell associated with the mist/smoke. But it sure does run nice.

White smoke (steam) can be an indicator of moisture seepage into one or more cylinders. The moisture is being converted to steam on the combustion stroke and then expelled with the engine exhaust. If this is what you are concerned about - pull the spark plugs and look at the tips. If one or more plug tips are different in appearance of coloration from the others you will know where to look (which cylinder or general location of a head gasket leak). Spark plugs if exposed to steam cleaning will look especially clean compared to the normal carbon residue found on plugs.
Good Luck! |

Thanks - I pulled the plugs. All look pretty normal, but I'm not an engine whisperer, so will inspect again after I get some more hours on it. Thanks for the input. |

Yep, I agree normal. Especially if you are running in cold water and air. I see a lot of that when we are skiing in the cold.

I see it here when the atmospheric conditions are right. Dads motor has been doing it 41 years now.... Maybe there could be a problem.

Yup. Although at first thought JPASS video looked odd until realized 92 must be single exhaust. ....

Mine does the same thing, looks exactly like that, in cooler water temps. My plugs all look normal. That engine sounds pretty healthy, enjoy the fun!

Ryan,
You mentioned you got the compression back. Did you do anything besides just run it? Regarding the white water vapor, did you own a boat before the CC purchase? If so, was it an I/O with underwater exhaust? |

Nope, just ran it. It was sitting for 5yrs prior. California. Had low compression in #6 but once run it came back. Never owned a boat before, but my mate has an 89 Nautique which we run often. More than anything it is the smell that seems off. Runs great though, so might just do that and forget about it. |

Ryan,
The rich exhaust smell may indicate a carb rebuild is due. Keep running the boat and see what happens before digging into it. |

We sold her last August, but she was stock with roughly 1800 hours on her. Motor and trans checked out perfect when we traded her in. While you seemed to have more steam then I did at lower speeds, I still think you're OK. We didn't have any odd smells associated with any of the steam. Wonder if any of these smells are related to it sitting for 5 years? May have to rebuild the carb down the road. Our new boat steams a bit with the colder temps as well. |

I agree with everyone else, the steam is normal. I see it all the time.
When you pulled the plugs what color were they? White, tan or black? Could very well be running a little rich and due for a rebuild like suggested. Also double and triple check the engine compartment while it's running to make sure you have no fuel leaks anywhere. Check everything from the tank to the carb. |
|||
When people run down to the lake to see what's making that noise, you've succeeded.

How was the new carb set up? Just out of the box and bolted on? Hopefully it's a marine. |

Yeah, it's clean. I wonder if the new exhaust manifold and risers etc are burning off, creating a smell unrelated to the steam. |
