    Posted: April-10-2016 at 9:04pm
Recently purchased a 1979 Southwind 20.

The boat doesn't have a drain plug to let water out. Is this common for Correct Craft boats? Does anyone have any insight on installing a drain plug?

I've looked all over the bottom back end of the boat and I cannot find a plug.

I'm not familiar with your boat but mine is in the center of the boat just in front of the engine.

While I'm not sure on your Southwind, most inboards have the drain plug in the bilge. You'll likely find a threaded plug (with a "T" handle on it) going through the hull somewhere just in front of the engine. The plug can only be used while on a trailer or lift, not while underway as you would with an outboard that has a drain plug in the back of the boat.

Piemat,
Your Southwind has a garboard drain. Per Webster, a garboard is: "the strake next to a ship's keel" or IE, close to the center of the hulls bottom. The lowest point in the bottom is just forward of the engine. Previously, have you been running I/O's or O/B's?

On some inboards, they just simply forgot to install the drain plug fitting.
We had to dealer install the fitting

Piemat,
I've been neglecting my duties! We always ask for pictures. We'd love to see some. Congratulations on the purchase and welcome to CCfan.

Wait, wouldn't "original" be not installing one at all?

Finally had some time to get to the Boat. It's been in storage and is making its way out! I did find the plug under the engine. Unfortunately, the roof leaked and it took on a few inches of water. The boat had some issue with firing when I put it up last fall so, now I'll start that troubleshooting process. I'm not sure what engine I need to order parts for. The water pump on the front of the engine has the ford logo and the valve cover says PCM 250. The engine Id tag says ERD WRR10. Is that enough clues?

Thanks for your help.
I'll get some pictures up soon.

So, where was the plug ?      In the keel, or to the left of the keel ?

Piemat,
Sounds like you have a 351 PCM. For parts, Skidim, N3 and Nautique parts are great sources. I suggest a basic tune up to start and then before just throwing parts at it, do some diagnosing first. Great you found the garboard drain! Have you been running I/O's or O/B's previously?

BTW, it's a good practice to remove the drain plug during layup.

In addition to Pete's post, It may also be helpful to get the numbers off of the distributor for the correct tune-up parts.

ERD would imply it's an Escort (after PCM acquired them). Pete is probably in the best position to know what other PCM parts cross to it since he has one in his Tique.
