Hello ive had my 88 nautique 2001 for about 6 months now and i have redone the whole thing, the guy i bought the boat from said he had the motor rebuilt and everything the boat runs good but i have a couple questions. When starting the boat when its cold it takes about 2 minutes of starting and pumping the throttle befor it starts I replaced the sparkplugs and it still does it, it didnt do that when i first got it. Also when i turn to the left at about 10 mph the boat makes a weird winding noise? any idea on that? thank you

The hard starting sounds like the choke is not closing. Remove the flame arrestor when it is cold and see if the choke flap is closed. The whining noise is pretty normal on that hull. Have a friend that has an 88 and his makes that noise, but his does it at speeds under 30. He inquired about it when he bought the boat and the dealer told him it was normal for that boat. My 83 makes it at about 20 and under.

possibly the accelerator pump may not be pumping fuel for start up, look down the carb and have somebody pump the throttle and look for a nice steady stream of gas, make sure he doesnt crank it over in case of a backfire.
as 83 said check the choke first |

Its the tracking fins. The "shark fin" shaped fins will make a noise during slow speed turns. My '90 does it, and our '88 did it too. Our '92 didnt make the noise, as they changed to a squarer fin in '91 I believe. |

You mentioned that it takes a couple minutes to start when it's cold. My question is how long has it been sitting since it was last started? The choke and the accelerator pump shots are definitely the first place to look. If the boat has been sitting for a while (like longer then a couple weeks) the fuel could evaporate out of the float bowls. The engine needs to crank over enough for the fuel pump to fill them again before you'll be able to start it. This is normal. If it has been sitting for less then a couple weeks, this shouldn't be an issue. A few years ago I had a choke plate that wouldn't close all the way just due to age. It was hard starting and idled like crap until it warmed up. I replaced the choke a$$embly (the black plastic thing on the side of the carb). Made a huge difference.

also, you may have a check valve in line possibly at the fuel tank, its a one way valve, it allows fuel to flow one way but not the other, it will be somewhere on the feed line closer to the tank. If there is a problem with it or a piece of dirt hanging it open it will siphon the fuel back down into the tank, emptying the carb. your carb may also have a small internal leak and after time it will drain. it definitely sounds like the carb is losing its prime
