    Posted: June-23-2016 at 4:39pm
I'm sure this has been asked before, but here goes nothin'.....

I'll be replacing all of the carpeting on the '97 Ramlin trailer this weekend, I mean attempting to replace......I have about everything lined out, except for one tiny detail.....

What type of fastener is holding the bunks down? It is a tube frame that was probably a self tapping fastener, but I'm having a heck of a time finding the right fastener....The bunks have never been replaced, trailer was hardly ever used by previous owner...

I'm almost certain that someone here has completed this task before, so any help would be appreciated...

My plan is to place the boat in the water early morning and start the process, Lord knows it will probably take me all day along with bloody knuckles and new cuss words........

I plan to document the process as I (attempt to) complete. Thanks, y'all

Thank you, that helps.....

My plan is to put the boat in the water, have plenty of supplies (diff fasteners) and tackle the boards.....I just wanted to make sure I was headed in the right direction, which I think I am.....

Start at the front and work backwards using the length of the bunk as leverage to follow the curve.

I plan on using this fastener to attach the bunks to the tube trailer:

Update:

I managed to recreate the side steps with the help from KRoudy (thank you) over the weekend, got them all cut and coated with many coats of exterior polyurethane (we'll see how they hold up)....Since 4'x10' sheets are hard to find, I had to make a decision where to place a joint, so I decided to make one just beyond the guide pole.

As you can see, what I started out with was in pretty rough shape:

During the recreation process:

Where I will join the two sections together (actually I will not "join" them together, I'll leave as two pieces). This pic is prior to coating with poly:

And this is the longer section after multiple coats of poly:

I still have a ways to go, didn't even get to the bunks, except for getting them beveled, which I cut a 25 degree bevel and sanded everything smooth on the bunks.

I'll update as I wrap with carpet and place on trailer.....thank you all for the insight and suggestions

If you mean completely wrap your bunk on all 4 sides, don't. The wet carpet will rust the trailer.

You are correct, I will not completely wrap the bunks, will leave bottom side open for water drainage.

Ray,
"Rough shape" is sure an understatement! Those are probably the worst step ply backing I've seen!!

The project is looking great.

I like to stay on the positive side, Pete

They were pretty awful! I think it is safe to say they have not been replaced since installed in '97.....

Laying out the wood prior to covering, late last night

First piece covered, I used an exterior carpet adhesive to hold the carpet in place while I stapled, used SS staples, this is a dark pic, but you get the idea, I think the first piece of the puzzle looks pretty good for a weekend hack and first timer

As a side note, I took my time while doing the carpeting on the first piece, I laid it out and wrapped it w/o staples to make sure that everything fit. I was nervous about cutting the holes for the guide posts. I made a small cut the length of the opening, then two smaller cuts in the corners to wrap the hole opening.

Just a quick update and I have completed the side steps and bow stops.....I think it turned out better than expected, based on my carpentry skills....After I installed the fender guards, I used a small insert into the wood and placed a screw, like the original, well that didn't work or hold worth a crap, so I just drilled on through and placed a ss screw with locking nut and washer, I did the same with the bow stops.

Here are some follow up pics:

Also, I rewired the trailer and replaced all lights with LED's, they looks sweet at night and are very bright!

New bunks and bunk carpet are forthcoming, it may take me a couple more weeks, but I plan on doing this really soon
