Jim's a good sport and although he and I have done a bunch of slalom skiing together, this was his first taste of a hardcore ski workout session. I think he enjoyed himself and was impressed with how easily we Greg and I ran the drills/coordinated/knew what the other was up to, needed or wanted. I think he also enjoyed being on a "real" boat.

always makes for a great experiance when you got a crew that knows the drill. Hopefully that is how Greg found Eddie and I. Why don't you come down and see for yourself?

Greg, I see you are "pushing" harder on your left foot...spray is higher and denser there...it looks like you are trying to edge out to the curl but its not happening...so i have two suggestions: first...don't plant so wide...plant just wider than shoulder width...it will seem very narrow...second...before you work the longline do a couple perfect backdeeps on the boom...maybe add some rope...5 to the 5 ft handle...keep boom tip low for these starts. Then after doing a couple good starts...go to longline. Another thing would be mix the shoe skis in...I'll probably think of more 👍😄👣

Greg: the hardest part for me on this start was getting "bent." That is, bent at the waist, ass up in the air, where the rope could finally pluck me off the water. I seemed to get stuck, flat on the water, sliding a million miles an hour and not "progressing." Don Mixon Jr. gave me a tip that worked: Feet planted, sliding along, he suggest I pooch my butt in the air similar to the pull-out move when having sex. That, combined with turning my feet down in the water and thus getting more bite, allowed me to start bending in half. The other pert to the story is to keep the chin on the water (head down) while on your feet for at least a 3-count while the boat gathers speed. A couple videos up it looked like you were up and got pulled out the back. I suspect you did not keep your head down while the boat got up to speed.

I am getting up and are getting pulled out the back (front?) regularly - I am thinking I may be trying to get to vertical before speed is appropriate. I also had a hard time getting my feet turned down in sync.
I feel that I am close but could be months away from success. Hopefully not.
Perhaps my driver needs to return to the seat.

As soon as I say go my head dips and I start the "get bent" thing. I push my chest as far down as it will go. If I wait too long I end up like lake boy sliding flat and never make the bend and never make it up. I also don't go very wide. You look like you are 99%. I think it was Ron Scarpa that said if you count to 20 and you are not up skiing then count slower or count to 50!

Good job Greg.
I completely agree with Andy and Roy. Feet are a bit too wide. Not much but a little. I've always said that as soon as your feet are planted and the boat starts throttling up, tell yourself to touch your heels together and lock that position in and wait for speed.
When you're face down and backwards 5MPH feels like 55MPH and 5 seconds feels like 5 minutes. It is not a natural act so you have to exaggerate what your brain tells your body to do. In that position your brain telling your heels to touch together in reality is only moving your heels a couple inches closer but that's all you need until your muscle memory and repetition makes it more natural.

The rest of your start I thought looked pretty good. As you start to come up you'll feel the spray from your feet hitting your chin. As soon as you don't feel the spray hitting your chin anymore STOP and stay bent in that position.
Now again with that exaggeration thing. Tell yourself to touch your knees together. Touching your knees together does two things very naturally...it brings your feet together and forces you to bend your knees all at the same time and all with one simple command. Reality is that you'll never actually touch your knees but that's what you have to tell yourself to get your feet to a comfortable riding stance and keeping your knees bent.
Then just relax and enjoy the ride.

Also agree that adding a 5' section to the shortline on a low boom is a nice step to transition to longline.



When people run down to the lake to see what's making that noise, you've succeeded.

You are very close to getting it. Keep your effort level at 100% and it will "click"...one spot the driver may help is that right at the point they see you coming up...back off acceleration some...because if they stay on it it tends to pull you over...out the back

So I have a question. I have always had a problem with one foots. Its a mixture of my skill level and the fact that we are going 40mph. So This weekend I did a longline and at the end of the lake we did a fairly sharp turn at the end and I did a whip out. I was atleast going 45 maybe faster. It felt like 50. I still could not bring myself to lift my foot up. I used to try them and I would almost immediately sink and fall. I can do them with shoes and do toe holds with shoes and I will say it kind of feels the same with shoes that I will sink but it never does. Does one foots on feet feel the same way but it just stays on top the water, or am I doing something wrong and it should feel like at that speed I can lift my feet up with ease.

Should be able to lift either at will...at 40. Try some one hand one foots...ski on left foot hold handle with right hand...line up the rope and the skiing foot...directly under and inline with rope...then do the right foot with left hand...repeat

Speed has a lot to do with it. Mainly depending on how much you weigh. I weigh about 195 and I usually do them at 41-42 on the boom, and 42-43 behind the boat. Technique is a big deal with one foots. Most people plow pretty hard when learning. I did. What helped me was moving my shoulders over my feet a few inches, engaging the core (stomach muscles) and lifting my foot like I am doing a crunch. If you do them like this you will be set up for toe-hold. If you practice them with shoes, get the speed low, like 30 or less.

Here is an old video. Im playing around with my stance and how far forward I am getting. Im looking down to see where the water is breaking on my feet. I know your not supposed to look down but im trying to figure things out. I used to try them alot and I would fall as soon as I would pick my foot off the water or I would fall backwards.

Work directly on boom ...yes you will get that sinking feeling ...press the foot you want to stand on down hard into the water...the other foot will lift up...keep it close to the shin of ski leg...center your weight on that ski foot.....work them on the boom til you don't catch or fall....don't let go of the boom....just spin back up and try again

Ok I will. I was doing them on the boom first day I ever barefooted they are so easy. Probably because you can have super crappy form. Should I put the boom Hight or low? Want to make it close to the real thing as possible.

Looking at those video you posted, you should not have any trouble getting some one foots going. Liike Andy says, you have to push the foot into the water v. riding the heels. You were making some adjustments in your stance on one of those videos. One of them you move your shoulders forward over your feet few inches. That would be a good start. Engage the core, lift the foot, and try not to roll back onto your heels and plow. High boom will be easier, no doubt. Try a few directly on the boom, then go to the rope. if you are struggling on the rope, go back to the boom.

Reading through this thread inspired me to take a barefoot set this past weekend, something of a rarity these days. I managed a tumble turn before my feet started burning too badly. I need to work on some one-foots next time, never tried those before.

Go easy on my form, I've footed maybe 15 times in my life!

I vote more direct boom time to get comfy on the one foot before going to the long line and or 5 foot.

Halfnelly...nice...pic 4 and 5 you want to be on trailing hip knees pointed away from boat on the tumble turn...it'll be faster smoother better funner...the leading hip must be raised ...both when you sit down into the tumble and then rolled to the other side as you complete the 360...don't put feet in til you are all the way around and square

Noted. Thanks for the tip. Hoping to get my wife more confident to drive so I'll be able to practice more. This was a rare occasion the lake was calm and my old man was there to steer. I think that's the 3rd tumble I've ever done, I made the first one I tried in college, then missed one last year because I didn't even have a barefoot suit and my life jacket proved to be a bit catchy.
