Stalling at Idle

   Hi All,

I have an interesting problem that I hope someone has an idea for a solution for me. I have a 1980 Ski Nautique, with std 351W. We exclusively wakeboard, skate & surf (the wakesurf wake is pretty good if you put enough weight in) 

The problem is that after a short time on the water my engine wants to stall at idle in neutral. If I engage the transmission, it seems to idle OK. 

It also seems to run OK on the hose with the cowling up, but I have not run for more than 10-15mins at a time (we are in a nasty drought in Brisbane, Australia)

I have had the boat for 2.5 years virtually trouble free - the way boating should be. It is used at least 2 in 3 weekends for around 4-5 hours and the problem has only just started.

Some history - I have always had a significant flat spot on acceleration. The boat is going in for a carby overhaul in 2 weeks, so hopefully if it is carby related it will vanish.

Don't kill me but a previous owner has removed the blower, could it be that I am not getting enough air flow to the engine?

I am getting a new blower & will be fitting soon anyway from a safety perspective,

	Start with a good tune up - new plugs, points and condenser (if you still have these in your distributor). Then set your base timing. Also change all of your fuel filters if not done so this season. Also check to make sure your choke is adjusted/working properly. It should be fully open once the engine gets to operating temp. Make sure all vacuum hoses are tight and you have no vacuum leaks. Write back if you need help. You should install a new blower motor, but that probably is not your problem. If you want to be sure though, you can prop your engine cover open slightly and run the engine under the same conditions that cause it to stall. There is usually more than enough ventilation to supply the air needed to run the engine. And if that was a problem, it would show up at wide open throttle first and not idle. Good luck!
