Has anyone added additional tracking fins to a ski Tique?

Dustin,
I'm curious as to why you are asking. Fill me in. |

Dustin, What handling problems need improving? The Tique's handle great! I notice you are asking about a steering cable in another post. Maybe you have another problem? |

Lov the way my Tique handled.
It could turn sooo tight. But over 50 mph it would porous. |

Porpoise? Yes, if so that would be normal. |

I agree it handles great, but I was wondering if it could be made to not be pulled around so much by a slalom skier. And I have a 77 Tique and a 74 mustang and a steering cable off a 79 ski Tique, the mustang steering is froze so I was wondering if anyone knew if the 79 cable will work? Thanks

In the course? How much slop is in the steering? Have you done any rudder tuning? |

The cables should be the same as long as the helms weren't changed at some point.
I don't think there's much you can do to improve the tracking. If you have someone skiing the course that well, it's probably time for a newer boat. |

I don't think you can do much to improve the tracking. I have a 76 ski nautique, no doubt the best ski boat made in 76 but it's a turd in the course compared to a "modern" boat.
Maybe take the grinder to the rudder. I would start with putting 45lbs or so in the bow and see if that helps or hurts. |

The 16 ft. boats can get yanked around quite a bit by a good slalom skier, and even more so if that skier is a good sized person. We used to compensate with steering as much as we could but the boat still ends up moving around quite a bit.
I'd say more tracking fins might help slightly, but not enough to be worth trying to mount them with proper support and not damaging the hull. I love older boats too but with 80's vintage 2001's available turnkey for well under 5 grand, and '90's NWZ's for under 10 grand, a much better ski boat is really the way to go for a good skier. You are looking for better tracking but the wake improvement would be an even bigger gain. |

Before I bought my ski Tique, I had a malibu response, it had no wake, could not be pulled around and was too big for the river I ski on, i hated it...then I bought the 77 Tique it is perfect for where I am at. I love the boat,I am 44 years old and I will not be slamming bouys anytime soon, I was looking for the boat to not be pulled around so much but limitations are limitations. I will never sell the Tique. That is why I bought a 7r mustang last week 1 for the cottage and 1 for home now if I could just figure out the frozen steering cable situation on the mustang everything would be great. Thanks to everyone for your input and help I will be leaving the fins alone.

Maybe start by separating helm from the steering cable. and then rudder steer arm from cable. find out what is actually stiff or froze up. My money is on the cable itself.

Do you know how to get the cable separated from the helm?

Dustin,
You'll see a nut where the cable enters the helm. Unscrew it and the cable should pull out. Next to the cable nut, there's a "dummy" cable and nut as well. This is so the helm can be swapped to operate ether as a push or pull depending on the location of the rudder tiller arm. |

At 44 years old you should be slamming the course!! I ski with a 59yo who runs mid -39 and a 65yo who runs mid -35, both at 34.2mph!! If you think old it'll only get you older quicker.
Totally get loving the smaller boat. After a day in my '76 my '93 feels like a freighter. |
