Yes, that's easier to rep[lace and correct. Its often exacerbated by a stumbly idle. It doesn't take much to make a racket.
If your boat has low hours, the cutlass is likely good as is. |

Mike,
One more thing, do you think the sound you are hearing is coming from the cutlass? Describe the sound. If it's more of a clunking or rattle, it may be the damper plate between the engine flywheel and trans? |

Mike,
Is there play you can feel between the prop shaft and cutlass? Before you change the cutlass, I suggest using a dial indicator on the shaft to see if it's OK. Measure in the middle and more important aft of the strut since it's a typical spot that's bent. The T.I.R. should not exceed .003" If you do find it's bad, think about an ARE shaft system. It's will make the R&R of the shaft easy compared to dealing with the interference fit at the trans coupling. |

I am a new boat owner. Purchased a 1989 Ski Nautique 2001. It's been a great boat, but now I'm hearing some sounds at low rpm when the transmission is engaged. I'm thinking it may be the struct bearing. Was wondering if anyone as good advice on the procedure to replace the bearings. I know the shaft has to be removed. Little nervous on how to do it.
