Looking for info on how to bench test a starter motor removed from a 1969 Correctcraft Mustang..Engine is ford 302,,, no solenoid attached to the starter,,one lead from the solenoid to the starter....Starting issues...new battery and engine turning over so slowly that its not enough to fire it up...also..during the attempt to start the negative/ground terminal at the battery gets so hot it begins to smoke.. live in northeast and need to get it running to winterize...has been running well for 12 years, most recently this spring.. however this year it would run and idle but had vertually no hole shot (tough to get up on a ski)...not giving up on this gem as it has treated my family well for 12 years!!..Any ifo would be appreciated!!!!

There's one connection, the bench test seems pretty straight forward to me. Ground the body.

You don't need to run the engine to winterize it. Get the water out, via drain plugs and disconnected hoses. The rest is warm fuzzies.

Could be a bad starter but more likely corroded battery cables and or dirty/loose connections.

+1   I agree

Also worn brushes and a commutator due for a clean up.

What's the condition of the battery?

Even a new deep cycle should crank up that V8 nice and strong, but do yourself a favor and swap it for a normal automotive battery if that's the case.

I vote for bad connections. Mine had same issue. Replace or redo the battery connectors on the positive cable from the solenoid to the starter.
Keep it as original as YOU want it

Ken,
Regarding the lack of hole shot, was it a sudden occurrence or was it over a period of time? Has the engine had a basic tune up lately? What is the health of the engine? Have you done any testing like compression?

Just to test the battery cables use a set of jumper cables.
If the engine turns over better - ya gota corroded cable.

If the jumper clamps at the battery end are clamped to the cable terminals, you may get the same results due to the potential bad connections between the cable terminals and battery posts!!

Andy,
Sorry to jump in but I didn't want Ken to just clamp the jumpers on and get the same results due to potential bad connections.

Ken,
If you have a VOM (volt ohm meter), get a voltage reading directly on the battery posts and then at the starter when cranking the engine. This may show a voltage drop narrowing down the problem if caused by bad connections, bad cables and maybe a bad start relay (solenoid).

BTW, a starter bench test is pretty meaningless since there isn't any load on the starter.
