Ok so the summer of 2016 was the first time wake surfing and wake boarding needless to say I had one of the most fun summers ever well I didn't want to have to ask someone everytime I want to go out next season soooooo......... I BOUGHT A BOAT!!!!!!!!!!
So that being said Yes I'm new to this I understand there's a difference between a marine 351w and a truck 351w QUESTION: my block has a big crack I assume from winter damage what would be my most inexpensive route to fixing my boat I have people telling me to just through a truck motor in it I know that's not right so I'm really hoping on someone to point me in the right direction PLLZZZ HELP!!!! 1986 CORRECT CRAFT MARTINIQUE 351W |

Being that Ford no longer builds the 351W engine and has not for over 20 years now any seasoned core engine will work for rebuild. What your rebuilding though has specific needs. If one goes back in some of the threads on this subject about engine rebuild there is a lot of great info and formulas for a "reverse" rotation ford. A reverse rotation will be what you want to build. you will need to source out a competent knowledgeable machine shop and make sure you and the machinist are on the same wavelength.
Tim B and Hollywood Kevin both have built some pretty nice engines and will have in-depth knowledge on a course of Action. Now if you are interested in a Reverse rotation complete Core engine I have one crated and ready to ship as I pulled it out of a 80 SN last year in running condition, has low compression. Good luck I am sure others will chime in.. |

Whomever is telling you this information is incorrect. Do as Jody recommends and read up on some of the rebuild threads here on site. Swap the RR parts into a rebuilt block. Welcome to CCfan. Pictures are always welcome when you get a chance. Also the group here is a fantastic resource for any questions you may have. |

Well he didn't say the block was different... just the engine as a whole is. And that's certainly true. And if talking about reverse rotation (as the original assuredly was) then that's one more big difference. But yes, a truck block can be used as the basis for the build. On a later model 351w, there aren't many internals that are rotation specific- just the cam and rear main seal. Front timing cover seal too maybe? That might be a bidirectional seal. Obviously the marine specific parts and accessories will need to be reused.

When I did my engine last summer, I sweated the cost details a bunch before I decided that a short block engine was the best route for me. They are readily available from places like Summit Racing, or Rapido marine, Michigan motors, etc, Cost wise for me, the machining and parts would have put me at the same or more cost than actually purchasing a short block. Some other parts of the country may be different based on labor rates etc, but the time involved in building something close to stock really didn't pencil out for me in considering the DIY route

But yours is standard rotation right? Many rebuilders charge a premium for RR. Rapido does not always have good feed back and Michigan thinks their parts are gold plated. wasn't it you who found out NO substitutions on Summit engines?

Hey thanks everyone one deeply appreciate all the feedback my man focus was figuring out if I could just use a truck block but after reading ur feedback read some other people's post I think I'm might go with summit was on the phone with them and they got what I need it really do appreciate the help guys

Better be 110% sure that they have right handed reverse rotation marine engines.Reading back no one here said you could not use a truck block. It has to be machined correctly,marine blocks run looser cylinder clearances,it needs brass freeze plugs and needs to reuse your crank, and the other parts that make it a marine engine.

I bought an ATK marine motor from Summit. Very impressed and so is my ski partner. It's my second ATK, very happy with both. And yes they do have the RR you need.

Correct, my engine was a standard rotation and that there are no substitutions on summit engines ( I wanted a roller cam) . Summit did offer a RR from ATK engines and the cost delta was only a couple hundred dollars. |
