My 1997 Ski Nautique had its steering cable replaced 10 years ago. Now, the steering while the boat is on the trailer is not too bad. While skiing, it is hard but not impossible to turn. Harder to turn to starboard than to port. There is about 1/8" of play at the bottom of the rudder. I am considering a new cable, repacking the steering strut, and replacing the steering support tube with one with a zerk fitting. Any thoughts?

It's the whole cable that has the problem. Take your cable out of the support tube and you'll see that the way it's made putting a zirk at the tube won't do anything. You don't have access to the actual cable.

Any sense of whether the rudder post is a problem as well? The steering stiffness seems to go up significantly when the returning to a fallen skier.

Jim,
The rudder shaft to port bores were never a precision fit so I wouldn't worry about the 1/8" play at the bottom of the rudder. All it takes to get the 1/8" at the bottom is several thousands clearance in the port. I'll have Duane the sites top tool maker "trig" it out for you! The harder to turn starboard to port is simply prop torque and the nature of a DD boat.
