Y-pipe sound???????

Same here. We put a FAE on ours this year so someone could sit in the back seat and actually hear themselves think.

Even with mufflers, one day the whole family could tell something sounded amiss, found one flapper had torn off. surprising how something seemingly inconsequential can effect the noise.

Ive been interested on how people have felt about their Y pipe as well. The sound through 1 isn't going to be the same as the sound through two.. these should have been relatively quiet engines as well. Seems like enough people have done this conversion now we would have at least a solid second hand account floating around.

I have been running mufflers on my 83 for years now as it was just too darn loud without them and I use it too much for teaching and cruising. Without them the people in the back seat might has well have been in a different boat as conversation was impossible at almost any speed.

If I feel the neighborhood is not giving my old boat the proper respect a quick blip to 5700 rpm or so is pretty distinctive even if muffled. If any of you straight pipe guys can catch up to me Ill be glad to hand you my man card.   I wouldn't add them to an older classic boat but for my day to day driver/teaching boat quieter is better for me.

Its kind of like chocolate vs vanilla. Its a personal preference thing. There are a zillion 60s and early 70s boats out there with "straight pipes" (no mufflers) and an awful lot of those owners wouldnt have it any other way. Others find it obnoxious. Not sure there is a right or wrong answer, its what you like/prefer and it depends on how you use your boat.

Sam, not sure anyone can tell you if its good or bad, and I am not sure recordings are going to be much benefit. Base your course of action on whether you like generally loud boats or not. If you lean toward doing it and do it and dont like it, I believe you can alway put a hull hugger in after the fact. I believe some folks have done that, but I am not absolutely sure that its been done and that one can fit in after the transition.

Your 85 is dual exit at the transom where my 89 is single. My thought is that because I have both manifolds dumping their water into a single 4" exit that it will be a bit less obnoxious. I have no certainty though. hoping someone with a single exit can chime in on their thoughts and experience.

I'm seriously wanting to remove the Invertaflow from my 89 SN and go with a y-pipe and no muffler. The only thing holding me back is that I can't seem to find any info from the folks that have done the rework on how it sounds and if they are happy they did it.

Anyone out there have a sound clip of their boat after they installed the y-pipe and any feedback about it?
