Hi everyone, I'd like to welcome you to me. I'm a new guy here. I just bought an 84 (or maybe it was an 85?) Ski Nautique 2001. Followed all the typical boat buying advice, waited until winter, watched the prices, drove hundreds of miles to pick it up, etc.
I didn't think I'd end up with a 2001 since they really hold their value on Craigslist here in Ph0enix, but after I missed out on an open bow Centurion because it was across town and then I missed out on a cool Eliminator that was down the street, I told my wife I was going after the next good deal I found.. Turns out that was in San Diego. So, drove to San Diego, bought a boat. On the way home, I also bought a tow truck ride and a radiator too...but I got a good deal on the boat. Anyway, I found this place, but it might not be the right place for me. My plans include a tower. And they include teaching my kids to wakeboard and surf. I'll probably also pull a tube every so often. I know that doesn't sit well with some, so I'll try to be discrete. After making sure she is seaworthy I'll start to build the tower (I'm decent enough at bending tube and glueing metal together) then I think I'll look for a speed control and then build some ballast into the bow and under the rear seat. I think that's the order, but I also have vehicular ADHD, so it could end up with vinyl flames and set of gold Daytons, though I have no idea how I would mount rims on a boat. Anyway, I know threads are worthless without pictures, so here's a picture of her. Sorry it's on Photobucket, I know they suck, Once I get everything moved to imgur, I'll relink. ![]() Thanks everyone, Troy |

Gack!
I always forget just how much I hate Photobucket. https://flic.kr/p/21XWT67 edit: Flickr isn't much better... :( https://flic.kr/p/21XWT67 double edit: The forum bbcode strips the .kr extension from Flickr links. Turns out the problem isn't with Flicker but maybe my understanding of the rules here or the admin's decision that all South Korean websites/links are bad. |

Welcome. Looks pretty nice. Dont worry about the tower, ballast, tubing..... No, they arent real popular around here (sounds like you have been lurking a while) but it's your boat, so do as you please and dont hesitate to ask for guidance.
Also, hosting sites are not necessary unless that is your preference. It is easy enough to post here directly, as long as you are working from a desk top or lap top. Phones and tablets, not so much. |

Relax, you'll be fine. My '79 is stock as a rock, except of course for the left handed Chevy, tower, paint, seats, instruments, bolsters and stereo.
Like I said... stock. |

Thanks for the welcomes. I'm really looking forward to the maiden voyage next weekend. I finally finished up the wiring on my uncle's pontoon, so between the two of us, we're hoping at least one of the rigs is sea worthy.
I bought some lumber and carpet to redo the bunks. That's probably what Friday will hold. I was going to reply in the "Carpet the right direction" thread, but the internet wouldn't allow it. Maybe I need to buy some net neutrality. Uncle also gave me a free Bimini so I can run duals. Went to the hardware store to find some 12x24 long shoulder screws to mount it and ended up with brass. Looks silly but I'll find some stainless ones soon enough, unless I don't. This thing is a driver and isn't gonna win any beauty pageants any time soon. |

Still haven't made it to the lake. Whatever. I'm in no hurry. Had some trouble starting it last weekend and figured out I wasn't getting any fuel. My fuel pump turned to dust so I went up to Autozone and picked up a $20 fuel pump that was close.
Now that everyone is over their heart attacks, don't worry. I also ordered a marine pump. I just wanted to have it for testing. Plus, I'll WD40 it out and vacuum bag it and it will make a fine spare. She still didn't want to run great, so I ordered a carb rebuild kit too. I also ordered an inline fuel valve. Although I'm not really sure why. I guess my plan is to close the valve and then run the carb out of gas. Like I would do on my dirtbike. Because a boat and a bike both begin with the letter B so the carburation must be similar? Right? If nothing else, I had some great alliteration in that last sentence. |

I see a lot of wrong turns so far and you haven't even seen water yet. There are some parts that will cross over from automotive but never fuel system . You must have got it for a steal to make all the upgrades worth doing. Good luck

I mustn't have been clear. Which is to say what I said wasn't heard the way I meant it to be heard, know what I'm saying?
The AutoZone fuel pump was just for testing. I have a brand new, correct Carter 60389? marine pump on its way via Amazon drone. The automotive pump (truckomotive?) will get pulled out and tossed in the spare parts bin. Also, the proper carb rebuild kit will be here this weekend. Between the 4Runner carb I rebuilt a couple weekends ago and the dirtbike last weekend, I should get a job doing this. And yes, it was ninja cheap. Oh, I also ordered some LED reverse lights for my trailer. I'll toss a 7 pin plug on there when I rewire it and have a boat trailer with reverse lights. BTW, I've decided that boat stands for Bust Out Another Twenty. The most expensive thing I've bought for this was the trailerable cover and I don't think it was even $100. Maybe it's a BOAF. Bust Out Another Fifty. :) |

This weekend I got to play with the boat a bit. I threw some lift blocks on the trailer with some new u-bolts. I'm not sure what sort of witchcraft was used to keep the u-bolts on, but I assume it was the souls of the vanquished and some kind of paint. My impact guns were powerless to take them off, so I sat there with a cheater bar and a patience. Back and forth, one click at a time. Until the patience ran out, Then I used the angle grinder. 4 hours of screwing around (I'm overly patient sometimes) on the port side, 37 seconds on the starboard.
I don't love the lift blocks because my trailer has this strange bracket over the axle that the centering pin fits in. I don't know why they didn't just drill a hole in the axle, but I think the way they did it affords me more alignment options than a hole in the axle tube would. I also took the automotive fuel pump off and put the right one on. Then I threw the cover back on with one of those little tower things to keep water from pooling on the cover. Of course now it won't rain again until next September. |

Probably, I bought a tower a few weeks ago and it was $250 off Craigslist and I still have to make feet for it. Also, I have to throw it in the bender because it, uh, doesn't exactly fit. The bender is going to crack the anodizing, so then I'll have to get it powder coated. My Craigslist bargain is probably going to double in price. So, was it really a bargain?

Hey thanks. That's good to hear. I fired up an Imgur account for hosting as most of my posting is done from my phone. Here's a picture of my carb. Why? Just because I need a test picture and I'm sure no one wants to see the camo first gen S10 with an extended cab and bobbed bed that I saw in a BK parking lot or the selfie of me with some dude dressed up as Colonel Sanders. He didn't speak English.

So, hey, does anyone know what this is? It came with the boat and the PO didn't know either? I'm going to assume it's the "sets the tachometer right" and "stops the part throttle surging" bar. I only assume that because I didn't bring it to the lake and those were the two problems I had. And a little bit of hard starting.
![]() I installed a new tach and it seems...off. Maybe half off? It's hard to tell. It's got a little dial on the back, I'll turn that and see what happens. Anyway, all things being equal, the boat did great. Took a roller over the windshield, got wet and cold. Didn't make that mistake again. Never did rebuild the carb, that's probably the source of the stumble and hard starts. Now that I think about it, it's most likely not that pole things. Pictures of tach and the KFC guy to follow. |

If you are seriously asking that question, looks to be an extended pylon, perhaps a home made version of one or possibly a barefoot boom, again home made possibly

It has a manufacturer's sticker down on one end and there IS some sort of mount on the pylon. After I get home from football practice I'll see if the mounts make sense. If it is an extended pylon, it's gonna be tall. Super tall. Walking tall tall.
Here's me and the Colonel. I found him shortly after I found the house passing out jello shots for Halloween. I assume not to the kids, but honestly, I'm not sure. ![]() |

Definitely part of a Fish Nautique. I've seen this setup on some of the fishing trawlers on the mighty Salt River.
![]() It could also be a mast from one of those rare Sail Nautiques. They came with extra large skegs to keep them on course when pulling slalom skiers on the Trades to Papeete. ![]() This is how it mounts to the pylon. ![]() My guess is it is most of a barefoot boom and the mount is just a little low. Or maybe that's where it's supposed to be, I know nothing about barefooting, I'm not even sure what kind of skis to use. |

Barefoot boom and the ropes need to attach to the front of your boat, usually at the eye in the front of the boat under the nose. The ropes hold the load of the barefooter while the attachment at your ski pole just locates it.
You can use these to teach people to ski or barefoot. They are close enough so you can talk with them as they are trying to learn. As far as real barefooting, Footing on a boom is similar but not close to the real thing. If you fall on a boom you just hang on and recover and get up again. If you fall while on a long line you get the full monty including the pain, eye lids peeled back and some bruises. It teaches you not to make that mistake again. The boom does allow you to work on proper technique and stance which will save you many painful crashes as you learn. |
