On my 1978 Ski Nautique it hesitates out of the hole and the engine revs up.
I think it is the transmission the mechanic thinks it is the carb. Carb was just
rebuilt last year. Any suggestions.

If the engine revs up and the boat no go faster then it is quite likely your transmission is slipping. It is impossible that it is a problem with the carb. It is possible but much less likely that the prop is a piece of junk and slips/cavitates. Check to see if your transmission linkage is fully shifting the transmission into forward, and that your fluid level is full or a little high. If both of those things are not the issue then you likely need transmission repair or replacement

Paul,
Back in July of 07, you were looking for a transmission. What was the problem back then? Did you find one and was it installed? I'm just wondering if the trans slipping is the replacement or your original.

I agree with Joe that from your description it does sound like the trans is slipping.

+2 ... Really only two viable possibilities. 1) prop slippage (cavitation, sheered key or other prop damage)   or 2) transmission slippage. But my bet would be transmission related - i.e. the clutch packs.   Maybe a cable/ shifter adjustment but I would think if this was the case it would continually slip and never really fully engage.
