I have a leaking rudder plate on my 1985 Ski Nautique. There also seem to be some stress cracks around the plate inside the boat.
I plan to remove the plates inside and out and seal with 5200.
Any thoughts on whether I should be concerned about structural damage in the rudder area.
Thoughts on moving forward from here.

Drop it, clean it up and inspect. Take a grinder or sander and see how deep the cracks go. If they are into the laminate then a laminate repair will be needed. Look real close at the stock log to plate intersection for cracks in the casting.
BTW your rudder and strut are (or were) probably bent.

Why not add a few layers of fiberglass cloth & epoxy resin to the inside?

Just grind off the gel coat 1st.

While the glass is wet, you can put a pc of plastic sheet over it & lay a flat pc of plywood on top to encourage flatness.

Is there any craziness I need to prepare for with this project, or is it pretty straight forward?

i thought there was a wood backer for the rudder through hull, min had one that was waterlogged.   I replaced with coosa and ran it to transom and laid up some proper glass or over kill glass over it and lapped stringers and transom

An accidental thing I found was when I wiped the fiberglass with solvent (I think it was mineral spirits but not sure), the cracks stayed wet after I wiped the excess off.    They were very easy to see.

Kinda like dye penetrant but much cheaper.
