Hello everyone! I'm super new, but have been reading here the last few weeks!

This is my 1969 Spoiler

Papa says he bought it in 1968 and it is a 1969 Model

I love this boat. I grew up on this boat (it was still green then.)
I want to learn EVERYTHING about "The Spoiler"

Please, any and all info will be much appreciated :-) If my grandfather is up to it I will try to get him to come with me to some of the Reunions and gatherings. The boat was his love too :-)

Oh Wow!!!!! What you have is a Separator and for some reason CC put "The Spoiler " graphics on it. If you look at the picture from the 1968 brochure you can see them. Art Cozier may be able to give an explanation on that.

Separator

Very unique boat and not too many out there. The 351 HM is a jewel in itself as they are sought after by us purists for the very unique sound and power they have. Glad to see it's still in the family. The Really cool thing is that it resides in GA so I'll hopefully get a chance to see, ski and drive it in the very near future. What lake to you normally use it on? Welcome to CCFan Candi and Yes we look forward to meeting "The Spoiler", you and your Dad.

Somebody's bound to ask why it turned from green to white and whether it was a paint job or re gel coating was done.

Looks great in white

Oh man, sorry to disappoint. My uncle had it back when I was about 12 and let water stay in it and freeze over the winter. The block busted.

It currently has a 351 Windsor Ford. The HM exhaust is still there though....

I would love to know the difference in the Separator and the Spoiler... I saw a Separator that had the throttle where the Gear Shifter is on this Spoiler.... This one has a foot petal for the throttle....

Question: Why did you paint it white and what kind of paint did you use?

Papa: The gel coat got so bad that you couldn't wax it and it still look good. You could wax it and 2 weeks later it would be faded again. So, that's why I painted it. I used a Marine Epoxy Paint.

Would love to meet you also!

We are currently trying to diagnose a possible issue with the gear box - Crusader Marine 1.15:1. We should know where we stand in the next week. There were awful grinding noises when it was put in gear (my other uncle had it) it went away at higher RPMs but at an idle was scary. We took the gear box loose from the transmission and put it in gear and there was no noise. Then, we hooked the gear box back up and took the propeller shaft loose and the noise was back...but not so bad.

Papa said we may not even have a real issue.

So now we have to put more graphite packing in the brass housing (I'm not sure what to call it) where the propeller shaft meets the bottom of the boat coming from the v-drive.

I wonder if we have some sort of trauma to the propeller shaft or gear box from when my last uncle hit a stump under water and knocked a few chunks off of the propeller...

Oh, there is no telling on the boat itself...thousands? How many hours on this motor? Not many....

So, when I was 12ish one of my uncle's let water freeze and the block busted, bye bye HM. :-( This was when Papa put the Windsor Ford in. He also replaced the fuel lines, steering, and painted it. So everything was back to AWESOME!

Then, my other uncle had it and let water freeze in it and the heads busted...Papa was pretty disgusted. Nothing discourages him like putting a lot of effort into something and it being back to AWESOME and then something stupid happening and it needing to be worked on again. They put Brodix heads on it. That is also when he (my uncle) added the speakers.

After that it wasn't used much and that's when the chunks got knocked out of the propeller and then a few? rides later the "sound" started.....

Now, I have it and we are working to see what's going on....

Candi,
I too like the white. Looks fantastic! Was there any attempt made to wet sand and buff? Once gel is oxidized, waxing doesn't do anything.

Regarding the gearbox, was there any oil in it when you looked? Can you describe the noise better? The Crusader V boxes are pretty tough and I doubt a prop strike would damage it. They have very wide gears and decent bearings. It's probably going to need opening up to determine the problem.

The plug on the side of the box is the level of the oil. Which plug did you pull and again, could you see any oil? The fill level is until the oil starts to come out that hole in the side.
If I remember correctly, the oil used back then was a straight 30 weight non detergent engine oil.

The description sounds like a garden variety damper rattle to me. Certainly check, and or replace fluids but if the noise is gone by 800 rpm go boating and enjoy.

and yet still I did not rule out garden variety damper noise - no load there to drop the rpm - no gear box - no prop - no shaft seal - just a transmission pump. I've been wrong before today but considering she is not an experienced driver of inboards I believe it is most likely damper rattle and not a big deal.

The Thermo-electron units as Pete stated, are a strong V-drive-They were installed in a number of houseboats driven by Chryslers. My Torino and Separator have them and the original seals are intact still.
I would suction out the V-drive oil and put fresh in-go boating and enjoy.

This is the "plug" I took loose. I could see the oil but it looked pretty low.

I took a bamboo shish kabob and stuck it down into it all the way to the bottom and it came out with oil on the bottom 3inches.

But, since you went in from the top, the 3" sounds correct

Honestly, I couldn't find any plugs on the side...

We got the graphite packing back in the brass fitting and put everything back together and took it to the lake!

It was perfect for about 10 minutes.

Then the noise came back..... I have no idea what it could be, but it doesn't sound like it is coming from deep inside of the gearbox....maybe a barring????

Here is a video of the noise....
