I think after 14 years (of my ownership, who knows before that) multiple rebuilds, a year of periodic clicks mixed in with starts, and now being deader than Elvis, its time for a new starter. (when turning the key, or using my remote starter clipped to the two terminals, or hot wiring both posts, the in post is 12 volts but the out post is no response
I am pretty sure the 1204 is my starter, but in shopping around, other vendors are not so clear as to the rotation. I have a right hand rotation engine, but because the starter mounts from the rear, it turns the direction it would for a LH motor, normal mount. So I dont know if the starters are referred to as LH (starter) or RH (engine) Most of the other vendors dont specify or say CCW and again, I dont know if that is engine or starter. Your thoughts/guidance? EDIT: This would appear to be correct, but would I be nuts to buy an $85 starter? EDIT 2 - This diagram I ran across would suggest they name starter by engine rotation, not starter rotation. According to this, I need a CW starter, which clearly is not describing the starter rotation, which would have to be CCW to turn my engine CW., but they are calling both, CW. Which now makes me think the $85 starter is not the correct one, based on what the reviewer said, assuming he knows how to name rotation.... Ugh! |

Larry I know nothing about Chevy starters but I bought an Arco for one of my Fords and it seems pretty good. After I found which one would fit I shopped the internet for the best price, think I paid around 125. Here is their link- Arco .

CW/CCW refers to starter rotation, not engine rotation. Top mount RH = low mount LH (ie, you have a “normal” starter = CW). Starter direction is referenced from the nose end. Arco makes good stuff.

Ah. You clarified the one thing that was confusing me. Starter rotation is based on nose end. Now it makes sense. Looks like 30456 is what I need. I was going to look into rebuild first but given this starters history and a new one for $190 , I think I'll just go ahead and order. Thanks guys.
