Swim Platform Oil

I have mentioned on here in the past that I have been using Olive Oil on my Teak Decks for more than 10 years now. I picked up some negative posts that indicated Teak Oil is much better so I picked up a nice bottle of Teak Oil and looked forward to better protection for my deck.
I am disappointed to report the Olive Oil and Teak Oil seem to give nearly identical service.
I report nearly identical because I can't call one a winner over the other.
We will put the boat on the water for 3-4 days at a time. It is in the water and sun the full time.   The deck goes in looking really nice, after 3-4 days use it comes out looking like I need to oil it.   Same with Teak and Olive Oil.   Appearance is a little darker with Teak oil but not much. Very hard to tell difference.
Just an FYI.   And, Olive oil is dirt cheap, Teak Oil is not.

What kind of teak oil are you using? I’ve had really good luck with Watco. Platform always looks great after 3-4 days in water, granted mine is in a covered slip a good portion of the time.

Like most things, it’s all in the prep. A platform should not look bad after 3-4 days regardless of what type of oil was on it. Getting the teak real clean before applying oil and then applying an appropriate number of coats (allowing to fully dry between each one) should yield better results.

Never used EVOO but dad used a mix of teal oil/boiled linseed and ATF for a long time with good results.

Personally I use Deks Olje D1 & D2 with good luck. Platform went in the water for two weeks for our summer trip at Shasta and came out looking new. touchups are pretty easy as well since you will get the inevitable scratch.
I pick it up at Jamestown but wait for the free shipping else it gets a bit pricy..

Biggest gotcha that I had with it is to not put on new layers too thick as it will skin up and not dry. Resulting in stripping off all your work :( .

2 coats won’t cut it after a proper cleaning. Try at least 4.

The PO of my ‘95 used this and it lasted the 10 years I owned it. I would just touch up every once in a while using a scuff pad and Watco.
As mentioned the prep and making sure it’s dry between coats is a must.

Either is fine as long as you do not use a Fram Filter.

I've used Amazon brand teak oil for about 20 years. I apply 6 to 8 coats, letting dry at least 24 hours between coats, and it lasts all season. Only rarely having to touch it up if someone is doing something stupid on the platform, like sliding off the side. As mentioned earlier, prep is key. I use a two step teak cleaner. I've never sanded, but I suppose that would work as well.

I decided to try teak oil Star Brite for a teak shelf unit in our shower and it's really nice teak oil! It goes on really easily and we waited 5 minutes like the instructions indicated and wiped down the excess. It looks great and beads the water from the shower. I see this protecting not only the wood but keeping that nice teak color from graying as quickly as well.
