Go to your local NAPA and get a marine 142 degree thermostat. That is what I have in my "66 Mustang. That was the degree on the original and speaking of the original, it was made with a hinge on one side and opened like a door unlike ones today which open from the center.

Jim,
For running in salt water you should use a 140 or 143 degree thermostat to limit the corrosion. There are some web sites or threads that expand on the reasoning behind it. As for the material, just pick up a marine piece and you should be fine. |

EXCELLENT advice! 6 out of 10 might be conservative.

nothing special unless you run in salt water.
when u buy 1 for your truck, boat or anything else with an engine.check it on the stove with a pan of boiling water & a thermometer.if it's rated to open at 160.give it about 10 degrees either way to activate. 6 out of 10 ain't worth the metal they were made of. |

Is there anything special about a thermostat used in a marine application? (Bronse, brass, gold, stainless, etc.?) What temperature rating is best? 160 Deg? Insight will be appreciated.
