What is the purpose of wrapping the stringers with fiberglass? It seams it keeps the water in and adds to rot. Can the stringers be epoxied down and left exposed to the air to dry out?

I think the fiberglass adds quite a bit of structure to the wood, kinda like putting it in a pipe.
If you just glued the wood down, once it started to decay, it could separate along the bottom just above the glue. |

That's my point just like in wood boats I wonder if the wood will last longer if it allowed to dry out being exposed to the air.

You get have the fibers to bond it with rest of the hull and give it more surface area and strength.

Wood boats do rot especially where water isn't allowed to dry typically low in the bilge and aft at the transom. If you bond the bottom of a stringer, the wood that isn't saturated next to the resin will stay wet. |

Just not having foam would be all that's needed. I had a 64 AM Skier in the late 80's with it's original floor and stringers and no foam, no rot.

I am having trouble finding Douglass Fur in my area . Somebody mentioned Southern Yellow Pine as a good alternative ? What do you guy's think?

I checked with Sweetwater Lumber they do have Douglass Fur . They Quoted me 152.00 for a 2x10x14 and 75.00 for a 1x6x10. 450.00 for the stringer material is too much even the Southern Yellow Pine was very expensive. I will check into a LVL next.

Well here it begins . I acquired a 68 Mustang . There is more wrong than right. As fate would have it a 86 Supra comp became available needs a lot but good engine and trans plus other parts at a cheap price. The Supra is in better condition but I already have a 92 comp. The idea is to marry the two together and end up with a running reliable boat that will be easy to pull to CC gatherings.

I am sure I will make some unhappy with this build . I am in uncharted waters here . This conversion is dictated by available materials and cost. I am not trying to restore a classic more of a resto mod. I am open to any and all thoughts and ideas concerning this conversion . You guys know more about these boats than I will ever know.

Go for it!!! You are a long ways from choosing rotation issues. Rebuild the hull and then make final decisions for drive train direction. Build it to please yourself. Bring it to some meets if you so desire. Don;t worry about the ones with negative comments as they won't show up anyway. Their boats are stuck to the trailers and wont be able to launch anyway

I did a Supra Comp a few years ago . When it came to foam I decided to cut closed cell 2'' thick foam and loosely fit it under the floor between the stringers and bulkheads. That way it didn't block off the scupper holes I added to the stringers so the water could drain to the bilge. |

Floor two front seats and upper rear seat and seat pan came with it. Fiberglass engine cover too , Someone said I wont be able to use the original engine cover with the 351 I am planning to install . So it might end up with a Supra engine cover???
