For my '91 BFN's 454, I used the same stock wires the Pro Tec used and have not yet upgraded the spark plug wires. It runs noticeably better than the Pro Tec.
I think new wires are very pretty...................Necessary? I'm not so sure. |

Livewire, or make your own. You might want to include what your engine/distributor was because depending on that, you may or may not need new wires

Pick up a Taylor kit from summit or Jegs. Spiral 8mm wires. The DUI wires are very nice but you need to give them custom measurements because their stock kits don’t work.

For some reason I recall my pro tec wires not reaching. Not sure what I bought but they came from Summit for probably $80 and I had to crimp them.
I agree quite a bit Steve. Little detour here....... last year my 6.0 Chevy developed a random miss at highway speeds. It missed maybe once every 30 minutes on the highway. I wasn’t too concerned, I can’t kill this damn truck and believe I’ve tried. After about 6 weeks I decided maybe I should add oil to it and when popped the hood one of the spark wires was 100% gnawed off by a rodent at the boot. The weight of the wire was just laying on the stubby side at the plug and the voltage was high enough to make the arc. So I really question the “need” for new wires most of the time too. |

In the 50's and 60's wires were commonly changed at tuneup time. Early wires were cloth, later were a synthetic called Hypalon. High energy systems starting in the 70's needed better insulation that's when silicone started being used in the wires and boots themselves. I remember Accel wires being the big thing in the mid 70's. It was when these new wires came out that they were not changed automatically during a tune up. Matter of fact the tune up that was done religiously every fall was a thing of the past too. A reputable shop would only change a wire if it were bad or damaged when removed. I'll bet Pete has some really old wires on something........

That was the reason I posted as I did.....
Having the 454, the wires reached and the swap to new wires seemed unnecessary. In the threads for DUI swap for the 351 guys, they mentioned that the wires didn't always reach. (Since the coil packs and the DUI aren't in the same place like in the 454). So, if you need new wires due to length, get the ones that look the best and fit. If you are doing it for a performance upgrade, get the ones that look the best and fit! |

Napa stocks and sells a brand named Belden/Powerpath. It is very good wire and not expensive. You may need to search or get them to dig through the catalog to see what lengths are needed and with what ends attached. The catalog shows all this information.
Go into the store with details. Know how long each of your 8 need to be and if you want 90 degree or straight plug ends, with a little digging you will find a set. I did it on my GM 350 in a Malibu and on my brothers Supra with a PCM 351W we found nice wire sets for each when converting to High energy distributors. These sets are not flashy but are made from high quality wire that works. If I remember correctly Standard Ignition bought Belden from Federal-Mogul about 15 years back but Napa still distributes this product last I knew. |

Protec 454 to DUI will be the only config that can reuse the wires. Fords wont reach and all non-protec, non-HEI marine distributors that I’ve seen use female terminals (HEI/DUI uses male).
Zach means Taylor “spiro pro”. Probably mentioned in most DUI swaps here. |

Here's a chart for Taylor universal Spiro Pro wires complete with part numbers for about every color you might want plus some you shouldn't ever want
With 90 degree boots you can't go wrong And then you'll need a crimping tool to go with the universal wires There are plenty of other companies with spiral core wires out there too chart |

Wire Kit
Here is the link for the wire kit. It will work with HEI(DUI) or Female Socket distributors (stock Chevy/Ford non protec) The wires are great. One word of caution, I picked up the Taylor plug wire crimping tool and it was a complete waste of money. It did very little to properly crimp the ends so I just ended up doing it with my normal crimper that has a provision for that (figured the plugwire specific crimper would be better but it wasn't). This is the link to the black kit, you'll totally be judged if you go with any wires besides black ha. |

I love colored wires. We've got yellow on one boat, red on another and some brand new oranges ones for the next boat.

I am just messing around on the judgement. I like black on stock PCMs and also my biggest reason is black doesn't ever look dirty.

I went with the MSD 8.5 mm Super Conductor wires that are a cut-to-fit. Super easy install and the wires look great. Be sure to get the RED wires as you should pick up 10-15 extra H.P. with RED.
