Hello all,
I am curious if anyone could help!
I recently had an issue with my 81 ski nautique. The starter went bad on me last year. Luckily it was at the end of the season. So over the winter I ordered a new starter. I order the arco marine 70125 starter. This starter had the permanent magnet compared to the old plunger style that was on it. I ordered it through my local boat mechanic but it did not come with the wiring diagram. I ended up calling skidim and they talked me through how to change it. Both my mechanic as well as skid I’m said I had the correct starter for my boat. So once I changed it this year I noticed that when I go to start the boat that I am getting fuel spraying out the top of the carburetor. It does not appear that the fuel is being sucked through the carburetor and into the engine. I made sure I checked the spark plugs and also the distributor cap. All good there. I am getting spark at the spark plugs and the cap is hitting properly. I have tried reading up on this issue but to no luck finding an article. It could be because I am incorrectly search a topic or I am ignorant to my issue. I am wondering if anyone has any advice.

Thank you in advance
Jon

Does the boat actually start? Did you get the right hand turn starter?

Jon,
I'm sorry to say you bought the wrong rotation starter. Did your "mechanic" ask what rotation your engine is?

At the moment, the boat does not run. Every time I turn the engine fuel sprays out the top of the carburetor. I did talk with my mechanic and he did ask what direction the boat engine turned. He has been working on the boat throughout the years and said this was the correct rotation. So from what I am gathering I need a ccw rotation starter. Is that correct?

Jon,
Lets take a step backwards. What rotation is your engine? It originally would have been a RH but, do you know if the boat has been repowered with a LH? Do you know what hand the prop is? A RH engine will turn the prop clockwise when looking at it from the aft end of the boat.

Here's a link to an ARCO page that should help you figure it out

A Reverse rotation 81 PCM Ford engine uses a CCW starter The ARCO part number would be 70201 for the newer permanent magnet style.

Your 70125 is for a normal rotation engine. It's a CW rotating starter.

The easiest way to prove it's right or wrong is to pop the distributor cap and see which way your rotor is turning, while cranking the engine it should turn CCW, if it's turning CW instead, that's verification that you have the wrong starter right now. Read the previous sentence twice to make sure you understand

i just want to thank everyone for their assistance yesterday. I greatly appreciate it! From all of this I have found that I have the wrong starter. When I removed the distributor cap it did turn clockwise. I appreciate the link that was set and it was very informative. There is already an order placed for a new one as well as some other parts. Thanks again for all your help!

Jon,
Glad you figured it out. I hope the problem didn't cause too much time missed on the water.

Now besides getting a new starter that rotates the proper way, I highly recommend getting a new mechanic too.

BTW, next time something like this comes up, ask here first!
