I’m just getting started and have a bunch of questions. I really appreciate all input. Cutting right to the question...What is the electrical switch on my velvet drive for? Or better yet, can I get an electrical diagram somewhere? I bought the 1966 Correct Craft in the classifieds from Pat in Minnesota.
THANKS!!

Chuck,
That's the NSS (neutral safety switch). It's in line between the S (start/crank) terminal on the ignition switch and the coil of the starter relay (solenoid). It simply prevents cranking unless the trans is in neutral.

Chuck,
Here's a diagram of the era: Note the NSS is not pictured. The diagram goes back far enough that safety wasn't the big priority it became later. Also, It's the same basic diagram when manual trans's were around and not many of them were equipped with the NSS's.

Perfect! I can work with that. Do people do “build threads” on this web site? Basically documenting the rebuild of their project? I have done a few frame-off rebuilds of hot rods, however never a boat. Maybe I will start one...

Absolutely! We'd love to see the progress of your project.

When you get a chance, explore the site and you'll find plenty of threads on builds of all types.

Chucky

One thing to keep in mind is that if your boat is a 66 and per the ad in the classifieds that you bought it from the engine is a 302, it's not original to the boat since the 302 wasn't born until 1968 so your wiring etc won't exactly look like the diagram that Pete posted.

That diagram is for an early to mid 70's Waukesha/PCM Ford engine.

In 1966 Correct Craft would have put a Ford 289 Interceptor engine in it with a different alternator, voltage regulator etc. setup than what the above diagram shows and probably different color wires since things weren't standardized back then..

Depending on what your wiring looks like, the diagram may help you or may confuse you

If you do have an Interceptor here's a link to a manual from back then that has some info.

No complete wiring diagram in it, but if you look at page 38 and 39 there's a couple of partial diagrams, one for a generator equipped engine and one for an alternator equipped engine. Key word is Partial

link

And below is a link to a 1968 Interceptor manual with a handful of diagrams that might be helpful

Both manuals come from the CCF reference section

Thanks for the replies. Yes, the engine is not the original 289. The boat will be “budget driven” / loosely translated...not stock. I do have the proper bellhousing with the wider spread of the 302. I also have the 289 bellhousing if anyone is looking for one. I have the interceptor exhaust manifolds. Looks like I should start a rebuild thread so all this info ends up in one place. Thanks again!
