Just thought I'd throw this out to all the history buffs out there and would like the history on why it took CC so long to switch to all fiberglass in their boats. Mastercraft switched in the 80's. This might shed some light on why we have all the stringer replacement issues for all the nubies. I was lucky enough to find a '93 that was in reasonable shape.

I believe the story was ownership of Correct Craft (elder Meloon) was not convinced that the ride would be adequate according to the standards to which they were accustomed. I think descriptions of competitions early composite efforts reveal some truth in that opinion.
Others may know the history better. The brochure from 93 says they sneaked the development and prototype in while the boss was out of town |

Greg,
I'd say in my opinion it was a combination of tradition and then more so costs of tooling. Have you read Parting the waters? CC went through some very bad times with the $$$. Why did it take over a 1000 years to get away from Amalgam? ![]() |

Wood stringers will last 30 years plus they never built these boats to last longer than that. I test drove a 89 Mastercraft tristar with fiberglass stringers I still remember how bad it vibrated at speed.

Per Wiki: "According to Geir Bjørklund, indications that dental amalgam was used in the first part of the Tang Dynasty in China (AD 618–907)" |

Now that I didn't know ![]() I forgot just how old you are Pete How are those early fillings holding up? Have we really gotten away from Amalgam? Kinda like wooden stringers, some dentists still prefer modern Amalgam cause it's more durable ![]() |

Since every company needs to perfect initial production designs , did the 1993 s vibrate at higher speeds like the Tristars ?

Feels like I am hanging 10 but in reality - probably hanging 6.

Wow Pete! Great info to pass along to all my patients. Wondering how they mixed the stuff back then? Amalgamaters possibly weren't yet invented. My very first boat was a 65 Century Ski Dart. Had a 302 Ford as her powerplant. All wooden and a labor of love.

And I would like to borrow your book for a bit to understand why I'm so addicted to our boats. Pretty sure I'm on #8 now.

Gregg, It's my opinion that Century came out with the Ski Dart to compete with Correct Craft. The typical Century back then was a single planked hull that was lighter than a double but still heavy plus expensive to build. Correct Craft was building most of their models using plywood which was lighter producing a pretty fast and maneuverable boat idea for skiing. So Century made the ply Dart for the skiing group. Do you remember who's marinization the 302 was? Century predominantly used Gray Marines but you could pretty much get any engine in any model. |

Keep in mind Pete the Ford 302 did not come out until the '68 model year. Even mine being built in the last month of '68 was a 289 but it as well has long been replaced by a 302 block

My boat was mahogany plywood. Originally painted piss yellow. The Interceptor motor was in need of some work. Had to make my own water plumbing with reinforced hose and copper elbow fittings. Paid 500$ for boat and trailer my junior year of high school. Sold it soph year of college for 3K since my car died. ( Still lost money)

Gregg,
Was the Dart repowered at one time or was it a 289? Yes, all the Darts I've seen were that yellow color. I helped an owner repaint his years back and remember how tough the original epoxy part was Century used. |

Definitely a 302. Since I was just a HS kid I've probably got the years mixed up. It didn't run OR float when I bought it. Had been left out in a boat yard uncovered for a while. Had to repair a hole in the bottom of the plywood hull (with the help of my father that used to build his own 3 point hydros.

Yup but mine had faded to a weak piss yellow. Used a heat element to loosen the paint first, then the O'l elbow grease and putty knife. Hand brushed Mediterranean blue marine paint.
