Probably because they take different routes to get where they're going. Usually (not always) the transmission cable runs from the front of the engine back to the shift lever and the throttle cable goes under the engine to the back and curves forward to get to the carburetor. A little long is better than a little too short |

John, Don't feel bad. I just tried and found the same. My guess is Keith needs to reset a setting. |

John,
Looks factory to me. I've seen some pretty crude ones! Were you expecting something a little more sophisticated? |

Not really it looks like PO bent the place where the cable connects , so I'm sure when I remove it will break. Update: Found one at Nautique Parts in NC. |

Don't blame the PO. The bend may have been done at the factory for alignment. |

Pete I think what he means is not the bending of the bracket to align but that some of these mounts had 2 slots in them much like a fork. The cable would be placed in one slot and then that dividing tang bent down to hold the cable in place. My HM ones were all bent to heck, they sorta look like this but without that lever- just 2 approximately 1/4" slots with a tang left between them.

Everyone is more or less correct. The PO I guess broke the lever off so he crimped the place where cable sits together. |

That is for storing a flagstaff. There are usually two to hold it in position along the staffs’ length.

"flagstaff" is a more appropriate marine term than "pole". Still, the same item. |

Question:
Getting ready to mount motor bracket and it is not quite level , is that a big concern or can it be fixed with the mounts |

Another ??
Any idea how wide this piece of wood should be, or a measurement from the rear of pole to edge towards engine |
