Hello All,

I hope this message find you well.

My 1982 2001 isn't charging. When I remove the terminals from the battery the engine dies.

Does this seem like an obvious alternator failure?

If so, any ideas where I can find a replacement for the 351 Prestolite ALK-6220-YP?

Thank you

Ski-Dim AKA Discount Inboard Marine. Little Mnt. SC.
Nautique Parts, White Lake NC.

See if you can find a re-builder and have it rebuilt. That is always my preference.

Put a volt meter on the battery terminals when the engine is running and see if you are getting 14 volts or close. If you are, with the engine running, the alternator is OK. I purchased a $30 or so dollar hand held batter and alternator tester many years ago and it has paid for itself 100 times in keeping me from buying the wrong part. You can do the same thing with a Volt Meter. A $5.00 volt meter will do the trick.

Not really. Disconnecting the battery terminals, you have virtually no electrical circuit whatsoever. Everything dies.

As suggested, buy or borrow a voltage tester. Maybe google how to test your charging system. Lots of videos.

David,
As mentioned, get the VOM (volt Ohm Meter) out and test.

NEVER disconnect the battery with the engine running. This was an OLD backyard trick when cars had generators but NOT alternators. If the alternator wasn't bad before you disconnected the battery while running, there's a good chance it is now. Disconnecting the battery while running can blow out one or more of the rectification diodes.
