Has anyone experienced starting the engine and the only way it will stay running is you holding the ignition key in the start position.
As soon as I let the key go the engine shuts off. |

Jeff,
Get the VOM (volt Ohm meter) out and see if you are getting the nominal 12 volts on the R terminal at the ignition switch with the key turned in the run position. Report back with what you find.

Normally means the key switch has worn out but Pete is telling you how to verify.

Check if the coil is getting the 12. If not, then check any connections between the coil and the switch.

CORRECTION:
There should be a ballast resistor before the coil so you should see 12 volts in and about 9 volts out to the coil.

Some boats have the ballast resistor wired into the run circuit only and bypass them when cranking. You didn't mention what you are working on, but a bad ballast resistor in that type of design will do exactly what you are describing.

Unless modifications have been made or the boat repowered, there is no resistor bypass during cranking on his engine.

Sorry. You are correct.I just assumed he was working on a CC. We'll need to see what he comes up with.
