Finally getting around to some deferred maintenance this week. I looked at the trans dipstick and thought I was please to see red fluid, meaning that the original 20W had been changed by the previous owner. However, when I pumped it out and compared it to new Dex/Merc, it looks more brown than red and it makes me wonder if it was actually a mix of the two. The viscosity is quite thick compared to the new Dex/Merc. Should I be worried, or should I just fill it with new fluid and move on? Any advice?

I would change it several times with run time in-between. You only get about 1/2 out with a suction change.

Cute "frowny face" By 94 PCM had changed their recommendations back and forth a few times before settling on Dex3 when it hit the market in that time frame. What's your 94 nameplate on the transmission say for fluid? If it had no running issues and you were just changing it as preventive maintenance and don't know the history , then what SNObsessed said sounds like a plan. Some people get more than a quart out with their pumps, so the number of changes may vary.

It has always shifted nice and smooth and whenever I checked the fluid in the past it was between the fill marks and looked clean on the paper towel.
Should I expect it to shift different with a thinner fluid, assuming it calls for Dextron on the nameplate? I'll have to run over to my shop to look what it says. I got at least 2 quarts out with the vacuum pump. Works like a champ, even though I ignored warnings in other posts and I used a 1/4" *plastic* hose adapted to my pump's hoses. I didn't have copper laying around and didn't want to to run to the store again. My feeling is the diameter of the pipe is more important than the material. I just carefully fed the 1/4" tube down the center of the dipstick hole and about 9" deep until it bottomed out. |

Sooo.............you're one of those type guys You really shouldn't notice any difference and they had everybody switch to Dex 3 over the years. Dex 3 showed up on the market in 93 and that's been their recommendation since then, no matter what your tag might say. These days you find Dexron/Mercon on the shelves and it's backwards compatible with Dex3 and works just fine

Looks like I need some coaching from you! I have a 95 SN 196 with the same PCM transmission and spent an hour or so trying to pump the transmission fluid out. same deal as yours...previous owner had changed it to DEX III. Anyhow I tried and tried to get the hose to a point (I'm using 1/4 in plastic tube also) that would suck more fluid, but the only spot that seemed to get anything was about 2 inches down the dipstick. When I tried to stick it in farther, I got nothing. spent about an hour toying with it but in the end all I pumped out was about 1/2 quart. any secrets you can share?

Get some 1/8 inch copper tubing. It will fit down into the hole embedded in the dipstick port. Make sure it is longer than the height of the transmission!
