Hey gang, I'm doing some preliminary recon on a potential lake rental for spring break. Ideally, Falls Lake, NC or similar in the central NC area (fam in Chapel Hill). Likely 6 adults/4 kids. Will haul the SN with me, so a place with a dock and reasonable launch access and ski/boating friendly. Thanks much.

Close to chapel hill the choices are falls lake and lake Jordan. Jordan is a bit closer to chapel hill. I have been on Jordan but not on falls. I don’t think either are built so a lake rental will be tough. There are good public landings on both. If you look a little further you can get to lake Gaston to the north or to Badin lake to the southwest. Both Gaston and Badin are built and have houses for rent. Both lakes are great for sure. Greg F, Art N and I are all on badin so I am a bit biased but Gaston is beautiful too! Let me know if you have other badin/NC questions. Also, I have rented a extra house on badin each of the past 5 summers for a family weekend when our house can’t handle all of the people so I have some knowledge of some of the rentals here. Happy to give you some feedback if you show me the houses you are looking at. Good luck. Hope this helps.

Unfortunately, I dont think Falls Lake is going to do it for you. If you Google Earth it and take a close look at the shoreline, there are no homes on the lake. Its an ACOE reservoir, so I guess that is why. It is a recreational lake, but you would have to trailer in. I looked into a small lake near Hillsborough/Chapel Hill, Lake Orange. A no longer on here CCF member lives on that, I went to ski with him there a few years ago. I found one real nice air BNB cabin there, but it has a max capacity of 6 people so it wouldnt work for you. Hyco Lake might be your closest, but that is about an hour away from Chapel Hill. There is an airbnb on our lake, but that is about 1.5 hrs from chapel hill, plus they are pretty proud of it at $275 a night. A lot, considering it is generally regarded as the ugliest house on the lake, but I guess that wouldnt matter to a week long visiter. https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/24388109?adults=1&source_impression_id=p3_1609250699_ot5UHaCS%2BTAXh%2FeP To be that far away from Chapel Hill and take that much time driving, you might as well find a rental near Falls Lake and just trailer in each day.
EDIT: Ah, David posted while I was typing, but pretty similar takes on your situation. Something else just occurred to me about our lake's airbnb. I dont think short term renters (vs long term leasers) get boat privileges, so axe that. Badin is a very nice lake, been up there a ton, but it is kind of a haul from Chapel HIll as well.

Hey guys, you both pretty much nailed it. I knew of Jordan being AC, and I suspected Falls was the same. Had been a while since I was up in that area.
Dave, I like your idea of Badin. I'll poke around and maybe we can find a time to chat on the phone. Thanks so much. We're looking at April 10-18. Not really sweating the drive as we'd all be holed up there for the week. And Badin is an easy enough hike for the Chapel Hill folks.... Thanks, Mark

Mark,
You may want to consider White Lake but it is one hour from the Coast so you are more east than Central but not too far from Chapel Hill. White lake has a ton of Correct Craft history hanging from the boat houses. It is a very small shallow lake so the skiing is not the best. Mid week is not too bad, but weekend are a zoo. Basically, everyone goes around the lake the same direction to help deal with the waves and such. They do have rental homes on the lake too. Not the best option for skiing. Badin is surrounded by National Forest so a good skiing cove can be found even on busy weekends. JMO, Donald Donald

White Lake shouldn’t be too busy in mid April. Things don’t usually pick up until the annual Water Festival week-end which is usually mid May. Should you decide to go that route check out White Lake Realtor which handles several rental houses on the Lake.

So, we re-thought the whole spring idea, and moved it to end of this month through July 4. Got a place on Gaston Lake. A bit less driving for us, and less than a couple hrs for the Chapel Hill gang. And it’s got a couple of houses so we can ship in the grandparents.
Thanks for all the suggestions. Ultra... |

Ha, you got it Larry! I'll be the one with my zippered, double strapped, compression-foamed Body Glove vest. If it were white in color, I'd look like the Michelin Man!
