Hello again!
Well its been a little bit since I have posted. I sold my 77 SN last year and I am getting the 85 SN ready to sell now. Our family has grown and we were ideally looking for a 93+ CB SN with a carb and distributor in the 10k range. There hasnt been much that fit my wants in the market lately but I have found one boat that I am interested in. The boat is about 5hrs away so im debating if it worth the time to inspect/ possilbly purchase. Its a 2002 SN. As you might guess it is fuel injected which is not a big deal but ideally wanted simplicity of carb/distributor. The owner says that for the last few years it has had some brackish use. That being said is there anything I should check out because of the brackish water use? Also this boat is alot newer than I am used to so im not very educated on all the "newer" tech. Im kind of old school relatively speaking. Thanks in advance!!! Burton

I believe exhaust manifolds only last a few years in salt water use.

Hi bwinn, a couple of things based on your comments....
Firstly, the floor space between your 85 and the '02 is not a massive increase. A bit more in beam between the engine and a bit more space between engine and rear couch. The two boats are only 18 inches apart in overall length, as I believe the mid-80's boats were 18' foot boats vs. 19'6" boats, unless the '02 you're looking at is the 200. I can't remember the change over. The OB's are where space opened up. From folks I have talked with, their general consensus is 3-5 years on the exhaust manifolds if in salt. With that said, proper care and storage will mitigate some of the other corrosion issues surrounding operation in that environment. Always good to look carefully at electrical connectors exposed to salt. The FI motors are reliable. Have had two GT40's, and other than regularly changing out some relays, no big issues. The GT40 ECU's can be an issue. The two electronic keypads the '02 has can also be a pain...issues are well documented here. New units are available.

Excellent reply thank you!! I do believe it is a 196. Sounds like I may be looking at manifolds in the future if purchased. How do the block and other cooling system components hold up? Good call on the electrical connections I hadn't thought about that. Gary, It is listed for 12k. sounds like he knows its priced well so not sure if its negotiable. How is the fiberglass and Gel on these boats any known problems? |

Ok, so a 196. You'll have a bit more room than your 18, but it's no stretched-limo by any means. Gel and glass should not be an issue. If it's only 5 hours from you, it's likely not a southern, hot-weather boat and just seasonal use.
12k seems fair based on it's overall condition....hours, interior, maintenance, etc... It's about a grand to change out the electronic instruments with analog, and there are kits avail. A keypad will run you 600-700 depending on which one is in the boat. Manifolds run about 250 each, GM or Ford and risers about 150 or so. Hard-core searching will get them for much less. Everything else holds up pretty well if it's been cared for and not necessarily stored on the water. Where exactly is the boat? Shoot us the ad so we can see some pics, and reach out to the group. We're large enough that you'll likely get a hit on someone close that would be happy to go take a look for you. Fairly common around here....

Look at the Sport / Air Nautiques if you are looking for more room.

12 does not sound bad. Ask him if he flushed it after use, don't know if you'll get a straight answer but it will be good to know. In straight south florida saltwater with flushing after each use you could expect 7 years out of the exhausts. Exhausts are basically a wear item in that use anyway. Things you dont think about and are much more important IMHO than even the wiring is engine parts - thermostat housings,U tubes, intake manifolds, oil pans, pumps etc. It seems once the salt gets in the cast iron it never comes out. A real good place to check is the upper thermostat housing where the hoses connect that go to the manifolds. No matter how well its flushed the salt gets between where the hose connects and that small area where the hose clamp contacts the hose. Check the gasket seams on the thermostat housing and the riser to manifold seams- you'll be able to tell the difference between say your motor in your boats and that one. I would not say it's the kiss of death especially since it was brackish water but it might give you leverage on the price.
Another thing to think about is the trailer- these new box section trailers have rust problems in regular water so check that out as well, new trailers are something like 5k +

Yep, what Donald said. The square footage from an 18' to a 19.6 is not significant. If my kiddies stay motivated to be on my 196, and start bringing more of their friends, I'll go back to a Sport.

2001 is 18’9”. 196 label didn’t start until ‘03, but it didn’t coincide with any hull change (02 = TSC2). There’s a pretty significant difference in roominess between an early 2001 and a TSC+ SN. Length, width and packaging (thinner gunnels, shorter nose, smaller motorbox, etc) all contribute. I don’t agree that the open bows (even the larger 21-21.5’) are significantly roomier in the main cockpit… most of that extra room is in the nose, at the expense of storage space.
The pics don’t show obvious signs of salt, nor does the trailer. The boxed framed Cc/ramlins really don’t hold up well at all when you add in salt. The seat bottom cushions look poorly redone but overall it looks like a pretty good deal at 12k. I wouldn’t expect it to last long in this market. |

Yeah, I should have clarified the older boats length, and not 196. Where did you see the pics?

Tim, Thanks for the info. Sounds like you've found it! The owner says its a 2002 though you called it a 2001. Do you think it is a 2001 or just a typo? Per my conversation with the owner there had been a few years of brackish water in its recent life but he said it does have a flush kit which is promising. Perfect pass installed but not working currently. Observer seat bottom has been roughly recovered by an amateur. Im thinking it must have a PCM trans in it? I'm told it was launched once a year and put on a lift in the water. I guess this could be a good thing for the trailer but not for the boat necessarily! Hoping if the sale goes through that the trailer will last me a while. The trailer is said to be a 2006 and I think see Ramlin on the side. Plan is to get there and purchase ASAP as I've been watching what's out there and the few that I've seen are overpriced. Fingers crossed.

We left for MD yesterday morning around 2am. Met with Jared the boats caretaker around 8am. Jared operates a boat repair business in Queenstown. He had acquired the boat after it had been overheated and the owner didn’t want to spend the money on the repair. He put a Jasper reman in it as well as new manifolds/risers, RWP, thermostat, plugs/wires, and starter. He ran it last season for about 10 hrs with the intention of selling it but had no luck finding a buyer. Trans was replaced with new 2 yrs ago. Boat came with perfect pass but doesn’t seem to work at the moment. The interior is I’d say 7/10 with a few scratches but no rips. Previous owner had slapped a piece of white vinyl over the Observer seat but the original vinyl seams to still be under it. I’m hoping that if taken off I will find the original vinyl in need of seem repair. Over all gel coat is decent no scratch or repairs I can see. The trailer is starting to rust but looks like it has some life left. Tires were dry rotted. It has surge brakes that don’t work. Swing away tongue. So long story short I could not pass it up. Made the deal and Jared pointed me in the direction of a tire shop. Two new tires and we were in our way back to CT by 11. Uneventful ride home Thanks to the road gods, and we were home by 630. Long round trip but I’m hopeful it will be worth it. The plan is to give it a good shakedown either today or tommorrow. Thank you CCFANS for the help so far I’m sure I will have a lot of questions!
