Hi, First post to this forum. I'm already enjoying the forum and all the useful info, so thanks everyone that contributes. Anyway I picked up a 2002 Ski Nautique 196 CB. It has 161hrs, PCM 5.8 GT-40, and interior and exterior is near perfect....cost $25,000. A little history on the boat, the person that owned got it to pull his daughter....she lost interest in skiing, and so it didn't get used much. Always stored in garage...never on a lift and not tied up to a dock much. Last time it was registered was 2010. Had been sitting for 11 years in a garage. The owner died and so the daughter is settling the estate and thus the boat was sold. She had the boat towed into shop, the mechanic drained (pumped out) gas tank, replaced the following: fuel pumps, fuel lines, all filters, impeller, spark plugs/wires, trans oil, and changed oil. The mechanic then said they took it out for the weekend and put two tanks of gas through it and all was reported to be good. I got to talk to the mechanic and he said it's a solid and very nice boat, his only concern was when stuff sits, hoses/seals or whatever can dry out or rot, but the main bones are solid. What was really cool is I got all the original paperwork from when it was ordered, all the maintenance records, receipts from getting it waxed even! The guy who owned it was definitely a guy who took care of things. Anyway my family and I have put about 4hrs on the boat and have had no issues thus far, I only have one concern. There is a "whine" from the transmission (PCM 40a) at slower rpms in forward, goes away at higher rpms. No whine in reverse or neutral. From my research this is a some what common thing and thus innocuous. First question is should i be more concerned about this? Second question is with it sitting so long, anything specific i should be worried about? Thanks in advance. matt |

The PCM transmissions are known for their “sewing machine” whine. Many on here have 2,000+ hours on a tranny that has been whining since day 1. Run that bad boy and enjoy your membership in the SN Club.

Matt,
Welcome to CCfan and ownership of the CC. Regarding the whine, I have heard that some were installing a short piece of rubber hose on the pressure side of the trans. It sort of acted like a pulsation damper?

If you want some reading on PCM transmissions and whine, click on the link below for some threads here on CCF.
link
The 3rd thread down titled "whining transmission" in the link talks about the reason for that rubber hose on very early models of the transmission like late 80's , early 90's. |

Congratulations on the Purchase, a Garage Queen is a great boat to find and buy. I agree with changing the old fuel out but installing new fuel pumps? I would have asked for the old ones and kept them as spares. That boat can last you a very long time. I also bought a garage queen 7 years ago, same story as yours, been sitting in a garage for nearly 20 years.
Things I addressed to get it running again: New Fuel and fuel filter Changed the oil in the engine and tranny Had to replace all the hydraulic shocks that help open and close the engine cover, front seat and the dash board glove box cover they were all bad due to no use for 20 years. The rubber exhaust cover/flapper in the rear had rotted out. New Impeller New Thermostat Had to replace the Oil Pressure sending unit and the Coolant Temperature Sending unit. One Trailer brake wheel cylinder had failed due to prolonged sitting. Knock on wood all the coolant hoses and fuel line hoses are still working fine and don't show any visible wear or weakness. I bought in January that year and did not do a water test, mostly because I did not want to miss out and let someone else buy this boat. When I did water test I found the previous owner had hit something and bent the prop shaft so I fixed that with advice here on this forum. Been a great boat ever since as I am sure yours will be also. I see your ND address, be sure to educate yourself on winterizing a boat or you will have very expensive freeze damage. Enjoy your first summer with your new toy, not much is as much fun as having a new boat to play with!

Every 1.23 I’ve been in whines, it is normal. The rubber hose on the very early transmissions was allegedly to fix a buzzing.

Welcome. Sounds like a great boat.
Don't whine about the whine. Have some wine. It will stop whining. |

Thanks for the replies everyone. Not worrying about the whine anymore. Put another 3 hours on the boat last night....all going well. Yes in North Dakota we have to winterize everything it seems, it will be stored in heated shop, but still will winterize just in case. Enjoy the 4th everyone. Matt

Matt:
Where in ND are you? I spent several years in-and-out of the Bakken Basin: Williston, Watford City, Tioga, Minot, Trenton...all the garden spots. I drove past Lake Sakakawea many times and wondered about waterskiing in ND... JQ

Hi Noddle, what is the name of the show ski club in your area. My son is currently working for ND DNR doing aquatic biology test in Bismark. Enjoy the new boat.

Turtle Mountain is a nice area. Lots of little lakes.
For my company I built a small operation in Bowbells…just west of TM about 100 miles.
