Hi, I;m new to this forum, but I hope somebody is able to help me.
At the end of last year my son and I bought a SAN210 with the python engine, a bit of a project as it wasn't in the best of condition. Well, the engine ran but the timing was clearly not set up. The distributor is a Delco EST with a magnetic pickup and coil. The timing at 700 revs was bouncing between 0 degrees and 17 deg BTDC. Put a new GM ignition module in the distributor and some of the bounce has gone but it only has about 10 deg of spark advance but I cannot get it to go in to set up mode. Read up on the timing setup procedure and some say remove the 4 wire plug on the ignition module (GBRE connection) with engine stopped and others say have the engine running - Have tried both. My problem is that when I remove the 4 wire plug the engine stops if it were running or won't start if it was stopped. Even with the timing jumper/ shunt in place the engine won't start. I have turned the engine over on the starter with the 4 wire plug removed and have a spark at the plugs. I've obviously missed something in the set up. Has anybody had a similar problem or knows how to get over the problem so that I can set the engine up. I'd be very grateful for any constructive comments Look forward to hearing Rob

I think I'd surf around the page in the link below and probably give them a phone call. Other companies like Mercruiser and Volvo Penta had the same distributor on their 502's which were basically the same as a Python 502, all bought from GM. Hate to say it but there really isn't any Delco EST luv here on CCF The last guy on here with an EST that he put on a carbureted 454 had all kinds of timing issues that he resolved with a DUI distributor, but that's really no help to you.

Hi Keno,
I'm still having issues with the Delco EST timing. I appreciate your comments that others have replaced the distributor with a DUI unit - are you able to give details of which one to use on my engine or who is the best supplier. I thought about a complete new GM EST from Basic Power Industries - but would I have the same problems? Hope you're able to help |

Does your distributor have a tag with a part number on it?
How about the part number for your new module?
Trying to use another distributor like a DUI with your fuel injection system would be a nightmare since the computer controls the timing and isn't really compatible with the older flyweight distributor. |

I’ve only worked on one 8.2L fuel injected engine and it was a Volvo package. I found I had no control over timing, the boat computer had control. I was able to adjust the distributor either direction while reading my timing light engine running and the timing did not move.
There will be a crankshaft or camshaft sensor that feeds the signal to the computer.
Found my problem was plugged injectors and it ran beautifully once the were fixed. |

Hi All,
Sorry It's taken me over a week to respond but - I got a diagnostic on the boat and although it didn't indicate much in the way of faults, but he did come up with suggestions of how to time the ignition module. The main issue with all the descriptions of how to time it are really for carburetted engines. With an EFI engine removing the 4 wire plug shuts off the fuel injectors and thus the engine stops. The diagnostics man suggested that the only wire which needed to be removed from the ignition module was the bypass wire (tan and black) and the ignition module end should be connected to the 12v positive terminal of the battery. Presumably the 12 v supply puts it in to set up mode where as the 5v from the ECM is for general running. Worked first time and now I have full advance. The trouble with the Delco distributor is knowing what you have.
The standalone EST for carbureted stuff takes a different module than the Delco distributor for injected engines The carbureted version has a pre programmed electronic curve and a few different modules with different curves for different engines. The injected one has a different module and get's controlled by the computer. That's why I was asking about part numbers But...............it's good you got it all figured out

I was not able to help but I can share that the 8.2L when running good is one potent beast. The one I worked on pushed a 25' Cobalt to nearly 60 MPH and sounded awesome. Also needed the 70 gallon gas tank.
