Curious. Has anyone replaced their pcm 40 with a pcm 80? Is it a direct replacement?

Are you talking 40a to 80a (1.23)? ‘88 would have used a 1:1 velvet drive….
In terms of swap-ability, the 80a is billed as a direct replacement for the 40a. I haven’t swapped from one to the other, but I have had both side by side and they are generally similar/same in terms of size (length), down angle, mount location, etc. The shift levers are in very different positions so that drives some cable clamp changes. Obviously the damper is different between the 2 (80a uses the borg Warner style). |

These 2 quotes don't really go together since the first PCM transmissions showed up in CC's in 1989, so unless somebody put a lot of time, money and effort into swapping in a PCM transmission into your boat, your boat is either an 89 with a PCM transmission or an 88 with a Borg Warner transmission. Assuming it's an 89 with the PCM transmission, PCM says it's a direct swap, but they don't build boats and do things like put a muffler on top of the transmission. ![]() People that have done the swap have had issues because of the shift lever and/or one of the cooling lines interfering with the muffler and have had to modify the bottom of the muffler ( or you could get rid of the muffler) Assuming it's an 88 with a Borg Warner, rebuilding is a lot more cost effective. What's the tag on the transmission say? You got a big ol' hunk of muffler on top of the transmission and a single exhaust outlet in the back of the boat or dual exhaust with mufflers in the bilge and 2 outlets in the back?

Yes looked closer at it, it says velvet drive. Two exhausts. Borg Warner? Can any trans shop rebuild one of these or does it have to be a marine specialist. Which model is this for rebuild kit options? Thank you for your help

And if you look even closer, it will give you the model number.
You can also search this site for several VD rebuild threads....

Steve, What is the problem with the trans? Slipping? A few years back, one of our past members who happened to have a marine trans shop had many of us including myself that rebuiding was not for the average person. The bottom line is we know now that pretty much anyone with a mechanical background can handle a basic clutch pack renewal in a Velvet Drive trans. Some of our members here have done it with great results.

Began with delayed engagement, then you had to give a little throttle to engage fwd. Reverse was fine. Then started slipping while engaged in fwd. got it back to the dock at 3000 rpms and maybe 1 or 2 mph, trans smelled of burnt something. Fluid level was full

I'd do some reading here on CCF, just Google....."correctcraftfan transmission" and weed your way through the bunch of threads that come up and click on the link below for a manual from the CCF reference section like Pete said.
You most likely have a 10-17 which is the newer slightly refined version of the 71C. If you decide you want to give it a whirl, parts are relatively cheap like 150 to 200 for the typical kit and if you need a pump that's another 200ish. If you decide otherwise, any reputable automotive automatic transmission rebuilder would probably have no trouble at all, blindfolded with one hand tied behind his back. I'd talk to the guy first and get his comfort level understood. You'd probably have to remove it and bring it to him and then reinstall it and check your shaft alignment.

Place your transmission in a milk crate, make a wooden lid and ship to Fantastic Finish Marine in Ohio. At one time it was owned by a guy named Eric Levine and he was contributing on this site a lot. Years ago he sold the business and he no longer post on this site. However, people on this site have used them since with great results.

Who is "they" FFM? Yes, the $ difference between a PCM and a B/W could be big.

900.00 to rebuild the velvet drive 71c at Fantastic Finishes. Much cheaper than the pcm. I will crate it up and ship it to them today. Thank you for everyone’s help on this
