Having issues with bogging down. Cant get rpms over 2200. Pulling my 100lb dtr out of water on 2 skis is taking full throttle and still drags some. In neutral rpms run up just fine. Is this an engine/horsepower issue? Transmission problem?

If it was the transmission, it would be slipping and making lots of noise that's hard to forget after you hear it and RPM's would be real high while it was slipping.

That leaves you with an engine problem, but more detail would be helpful Wink

Does it start good, idle normally, run smooth or is it spittin' and sputterin' as you're taking off?

Does it sound great or sound wounded?
Any smoke from the exhaust?  White or Blue/Black

I am wondering if it is running out of fuel, maybe the anti siphon valve in the gas tank or a dirty clogged fuel filter.

In neutral it sounds good. It idles well with an occasional sputter when shifting from neutral into fwd. There is an occasional whine from the back part of engine/transmission when revving in neutral and then backong off. No smoke. It literally just bogs down like there is too much load on it when i give it the throttle to go. It takes a good 15 to 20 sec to get up to full speed which is around 33 mph according to my gps. Doesnt get above 2200 rpms. I can rev it up in neutral to 4000 rpms easily in neutral.

Travis,
Has anything been done to the engine recently? Also, note any engine wthout a load will rev up the RPM's.

Did these symptoms just start happening?  Or, has the engine always acted this way?  If this is a recent issue, then bogging down sounds like a carburetor problem.  Not turning over 2,200 RPMs could also have spark issues…distributor acting up…coil acting up.

Also sounds like one or two cylinder isn't firing possible two wires swapped

they can sound 'fine' when like this, that is why 'fine' is not fine

33mph at 2200 rippems also suggests its the wrong prop, wildly

This is a new issue this summer. No changes to prop. I did have an overheating issue with a bad impeller earlier this summer. Ill checknout spark plugs. Havent changed them since i purchased 3 yrs ago.

The RPM's and MPH don't match and is Tom's concern. What prop is on the boat?

FYI, never run the engine without water. The RWP is water lubricated.

Is it possible a couple chunks of the impreller broke off and lodged somewhere that could cause this problem? Not having any overheating problems so didnt think about it.

Maybe you need to describe this "overheating issue", how hot was the engine, did it run good again afterwards or has it been a problem since then.

Not so good information just leads to not so good answers/suggestions.Wink

If it's using more gas than is being supplied, it'll run out of gas and quit running. It doesn't sound like it quits from your description, just chugs along slowly.

On a good day, before the problem(s) what were your tach/speed readings?

What's under the distributor cap, points or electronic ignition?
