Had to change motor last year in a 84 supreme , 351 PCM factory motor was in the boat , I installed the same motor after rebuilding it and added a mid rise intake to the motor . Fires up and runs great for about 45 mins . Then it seems to load up after idling when changing riders , . Do y’all always run marine carburetors ? If so what size ? I thank I have a fuel problem of some sort . PLEASE HELP

Y'all should use a marine carburetor. Your engine originally had a 600 cfm Holley and 600 cfm is fine for what you did to the engine.

Sometimes some people use an automotive carburetor, some of those people have a boat explosion or fire, some of those people end up in the hospital, some of those end up in the morgue, some are lucky and never have a problem Wink

Otherwise like Pete said, more info would be good.

What's your ignition setup?

What's the intake manifold, brand and part number would be good

Is the engine level or leaning back . If its leaning I have had great success with setting the float levels by installing a 9 degree wedge spacer under the carb to level it out. The pics are before the wedge.

The carb is a 700 Holley on top of a weiland stealth intake . Motor has 69.6 hours .

The Weiand has plenty of seating area for the carburetor, so vacuum leaks shouldn't be an issue.

A 700 cfm Holley probably doesn't have that magical "marine " designation but that won't be causing your running problem.

Ignition system is what?

There's an old saying that 90% of all carburetor problems are ignition related. so it's worth looking at the ignition system. Wink

Then again you may just need a carburetor cleaning or idle mixture adjustment to cure your problem.

So me not being a carb guy ,having another sitting in the shop I installed a summit street 600 . Have the same problem. I thank the carb is good . Should the coil be next being that is the only thing I didn’t change other than the distributor?

A coil wouldn't be a bad idea, but it would be good to know what the distributor is and if it's points or electronic under the cap

Mallory distributor with electric. I replaced the distributor about 5 years ago . Last summer replace the button, wires ,plugs . Is that helpful?

Sorta helpful Wink

Assuming it's a Mallory with a Mallory module or it could be a Mallory with a Pertronix module, but if it had been running good with your setup in it before the rebuild, I'd probably replace the coil with the same as you have now and call it troubleshooting.

It may or may not cure your problem , but at worst, you'll have a spare coil.

Maybe the distributor cap is overdue for replacement too.

If you need a cap and the Mallory part number is 209D, a good place to find a cap is in the EBAY link below.

An OMC 982209 is a NOS OMC cap that works great and is cheaper since it's old and gathering dust on shelves. I'd call it a repackaged Mallory cap with the OMC label on the box


I'd probably buy some more but I think I have enough to last until I'm 108 years old Wink
