picked up a 1973 Ski Nautique.
Two questions: the HIN# SN2035 per the title and registration but the old Illinois registration states its a 1973. the newer title for Wisconsin states its a 1971. the person I bought it from states Wisconsin made a mistake on the title. Can I tell year of boat from he HIN#. Second question: boat has a 351 palmer 255H.P. engine but only getting 3400 RPM? does this sound right? throttle seems to be getting fully opened. Gearing? Prop? thanks in advance

Michael,
The SN2035 is not a HIN. It's before they started the HIN system. The SN stands for Ski Nautique and then the numbers are simply CC's serial numbers. The HIN's started around 1971 so I'd say your boat may have just missed it. Check the upper starboard side of the transom. If there is a HIN, it will be molded into the gel there.

Regarding the 3400, have you checked it with a shop tach? What prop is on the boat? Is the timing advancing with the RPM's? If not, the mechanical advanced flyweights under the point plate in the distributor may need to be cleaned up and oiled. Are the secondaries opening on the carb?

i checked the starboard side and found no identification. Would this mean it is likly a 1971? its the same colors as the front cover of the 1973 brochure. White with Blue lettering and red stripe under lettering. Not sure if this was the first year for that color combination?
As for the prop im not sure what prop is on the boat but will check. I will have to look with a timing gun to see if advancing and the secondaries as well. Boat seems to run strong but takes more time than i would think to plane.

I'd say the Wisconsin title is correct and the seller is wrong so go with the 71. The same colors were used for several years plus, don't trust the brochures. Back then CC had a tendency to use the same pictures for different years.
How about posting some pictures? I know we'd love to see what you have.

I wouldn't be too quick to call the boat a 1971 based on anything written above. Here's a link to an old thread that has some serial numbers listed. You'll find conflicting information about when HIN numbers first were molded into the transom and the couple of years prior to that, they were on the metal BIA capacity plate next to the throttle and before that, they were on a metal plate nailed to a stringer. At the top of page 2 you'll see mention of a 73 with the serial number of SN2236 and a little farther down a 71 with the number 1666. I'd do some more homework including posting plenty of pictures in this thread before nailing down the year. And.......someone needs to just say Welcome to CCF, even if you do have a 2016 G23 listed as one of your boats ![]() You ironically just happened to join on the same day as the latest round of "surf barge" bashing was taking place Here's a link to that thread for your enjoyment I figure, it's your boat, enjoy it |

You could also click on the link below and get an idea of the range of serial numbers for a 71 that have shown up in the diaries/for sale section of CCF. Your serial number doesn't fall in that range, but would be more in line with a 73. Here's a link to a 73 in the Diaries with an ID number of 2053 PS The cover of the 74 Brochure has your color scheme not the 73 brochure at least here on CCF. There is a 73 brochure that has your boat on the cover, or maybe inside the brochure though. I'll have to dig it up. |

![]() ![]() As a side note the boat has on step plate on each side with the wood/teak slats. Not sure when they stopped using 4 metal plates and started using two. ![]() |

Good going Savy........make the barge look little and the little boat look big in your pictures
I like your style Here's the 73 brochure from someplace not called CCF. ![]() Looks a lot like your boat, but your driver is better looking. Both years would have had 2 fins underneath. Looking more and more like it's a 73 (with a platform that was added a number of years later) ![]() |

thanks! I agree about the driver for sure! Did the '72's have two metal step plates per side or the single with teak slats?

How'd 1972 sneak into this conversation? Not sure on the step plates for 71 but the 73 had one per side and there may have been some inconsistencies there.

after looking at the info/links you sent me earlier on the SN #'s for '71 I have kinda ruled out this boat being a '71. Trying now to find differences between the '72 and '73. Thanks again for all your info and knowledge. Somewhere i saw old order forms and i cant remember where. I wonder what year they started using the Palmer 351 with 255 H.P.?

Here's a link to some Palmer reading on CCF Palmer and 1973 get mentioned quite a bit. Palmer and any year before that doesn't seem to get mentioned.

Savy An Acme 540 prop works well as an all around prop on that hull assuming it's the original reverse rotation engine. The difference between an old beat up prop and a new Acme can be pretty big. For comparison purposes the boat shouldn't be a whole lot different from your Tique when it comes to acceleration and speed. |

Michael,
When you do get a chance, knowing what prop is on the boat may help with your low RPM issue.

The prop is 13RH 14. It was a little beat up so I took it in to be re worked. Looks original. Thanks
