Was out on the tique pulling a buddy on the skurfboard. Started smelling a burning smell and lots of smoke out of the exhaust. Come to find out i found a broken water pickup belt. Motor still turns over but no start. Have a new belt ready to go but was just wondering if i couldve screwed the motor up running it dry. thanks

Reed,
An overheat can cause mutiple problems but first you need to determine if the engine is getting fuel and spark. Get back to us with that. Did you shut down the engine when you saw and smelled the burning? After that did you try a restart after it cooled down?

Yes, i turned the boat off instantly and got a tow back to the dock, and yes the motor wasnt seized or blown. Was able to get the new belt on and it ran great, got new oil in her too. Just one notice: i was adjusting the tension on the pulleys and the tension in the belt wouldnt let me get the bottom bolt in. Only the top one, is that dangerous or?

You really need both bolts otherwise the one you have in there will probably break off from the pump trying to twist since it's not held to the bracket very well.

Did you use a PCM belt or something from the auto parts store that is supposed to be the same length?

Why not try a belt that's a little longer (like a half inch to an inch or so) to give you some adjustment room.

This link below gives the belt dimensions

Reed,
How did you get from above to below in an hour and a half. Something's missing?

Fill us in. Yes, what happened with the damper plate? Was it what caused the problem?

Good to know, thought using 1 bolt was a little janky. Picked up a 45 inch belt from o’reilly autparts and put that on the motor hense the tight fit.

Damper plate was fixed at the marina on my lake. We put a ALTDA-106 that needed trimming. Mechanic was confident he could fix it and so far so good, no problems until the water pickup belt today.

If the top width or the depth of the V is a little different, it can affect the fit by quite a bit as far as the length goes.

PCM belts for the 302/351 are one of the things they sell that are actually priced reasonably. Wink

The auto parts store belts are available in 1/2” length increments.  So if a 45 is close but does not fit a 45.5 or 46 might be perfect.  Choose a quality belt, the parts stores usually stock an OE quality belt, Dayco, Gates or Goodyear or they offer an off shore belt for half price.  You get what you pay for buy a good one and it will last at least 10 years in your boat.  Most stores know your fit might be hard to fit so they will sell you 2 or 3 sizes and accept you will bring back the ones that don’t fit.   As already noted you need the extra bolt installed.   The older boats had exhaust hose that collapse when you run with no water, it was a safety feature that is no longer used starting in the late 80’s.   If your engine has no power, idles OK but won’t accelerate this can be an issue.  Only fix is new hoses if they have collapsed, it is an internal wall that collapses, the outside can look fine.

5/16-18 by 7/8 inch long.

The top one for the adjusting slot has a lock washer and a flat washer

The bottom one for the pivot hole only uses a lockwasher.

That's from the PCM illustrated parts manual in the link

I'd tell you what page, but you'll have fun and learn a lot weeding your way through it Wink
